"If everything goes well, I'm committing."
Banneker (College Park, GA) 3-star safety Darrell Simmons is rated by Scout.com as the #26 safety prospect in America this recruiting year, and the Peach State standout is gearing up to make a visit to Columbia this weekend to take in USC's game against arch-rival Clemson. Simmons, who runs a 4.5 second forty yard dash, said he's looking forward to his upcoming visit to South Carolina.
"I went to South Carolina's spring game, but I'm looking forward to this visit," said Simmons. "I just want to see how the environment is. I want to have a good time and see how things go. I'll check out the academics and all."
Simmons, who also has offers from major programs like Miami, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and Ohio State, said he's already very familiar with the Gamecocks because two of his former high school teammates play for USC.
"I'm real familiar with them. I have two former players from my school (Carlos Thomas and Ladi Ajiboye) that attend South Carolina, and they update me all the time on how it's going and what things are like. They tell me they like it and stuff. I'm pretty up to date on them."
The punishing defensive back prospect had previously named a top two of Alabama and Miami, but according to Simmons, South Carolina has made a strong push for his services of late.
"Miami and South Carolina stand out right now. I grew up liking Miami. I always said that if I got an offer from them I'd go there, but plans change. For South Carolina, I like the way they play defense. They have a real good defensive backs coach, Coach (Ron) Cooper. I feel like it's everything (Thomas and Ajiboye) have been telling me. I like them a lot."
Simmons, who is being recruited by Coach Ron Cooper for the Gamecocks, said if his visit to Columbia goes well this weekend, he will in all likelihood put an end to the recruiting process and commit to South Carolina.
"If everything goes well, I'm committing to South Carolina on Saturday."
In an earlier interview with Scout.com, Simmons described what strengths he brings to the gridiron and even likened his playing style to one of the top defensive players in the NFL.
"I'm strong and very athletic. I have great instincts and am a natural athlete. I'm like Sean Taylor (Washington Redskins free safety). He was my size in high school, and I think I play a lot like him."
Simmons has racked up 79 tackles, 2 fumble recoveries for touchdown and an interception so far this season. His Banneker team is gearing up for a second round playoff game on Friday night.
