It's Official: Whitlock is a Gamecock
Chester Head Football Coach Victor Floyd confirmed to GamecockAnthem.com on Tuesday that his star pupil has in fact committed to South Carolina, and he's decided not to have a press conference announcing his decision.
"He went to a press conference at the state championship game, and he went ahead and told people then that he's going to South Carolina," said Floyd. "We're just going to leave it as is. We're not going to do anything else on top of that."
Floyd has coached Whitlock since his freshman year, and the veteran coach is proud of the role that Whitlock, who is nicknamed C.C., has played in helping build the Chester football program from the ground up.
"He's been a part of the foundation that's being built for the program since I've been here. He's part of my first senior class, because when I first started coaching at Chester he was a freshman. He's helped build it. We went from 2-9 to runner up in the state on Saturday night. He's been an integral part in the building, and he's a really good athlete that has a lot of potential."
According to Floyd, Whitlock's natural athleticism and playmaking ability are what make him such a special talent on the gridiron.
"His athleticism is the biggest thing. He can do a lot of things on the football field - return kicks and punts, play receiver, play corner and all that kind of stuff. His versatility and athleticism are his biggest strengths."
Aside from his talents on the football field, Whitlock is also a quality individual and an excellent student.
"He's a pleaser as a person. He wants to try to please you and not let you down. He's a good person. He's a solid student. He'll be finishing high school Friday so he can enroll at South Carolina in January."
While many top recruits are drawn to the USC football program because of the opportunity to play for Coach Steve Spurrier or the ability to play in the premier conference in college football, Floyd believes that Whitlock chose South Carolina because it was close to home.
"He just stayed close to home. That was probably the biggest thing with him. He's just not the type of young man that's going to go far from home."
The 5'11", 175 pound Whitlock is rated by Scout.com as the #3 overall prospect in South Carolina this year. He's also rated as the #6 cornerback prospect in America, but the Gamecocks have recruited him with the potential to play wide receiver in the USC offense.
Whitlock chose South Carolina over offers from Florida, Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Clemson, North Carolina, Kentucky and several others. He becomes the 16th commitment for USC in the 2008 recruiting class.
