Gamecocks land athletic offensive tackle

The month of December has gotten off to a bang for South Carolina on the recruiting front, and the commitments keep rolling in. On Saturday afternoon, Etowah (Woodstock, GA) standout offensive lineman Elliot Williams pledged his commitment to Coach Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks. Read inside for more.

The 6'6", 275 pound Williams, who is slated to move up to 3-star status in's rankings later this month, chose the Gamecocks over offers from Auburn, Mississippi State, Central Florida and Marshall. Williams' commitment does not come as a surprise, as he told in an interview just over a week ago that USC was recruiting him the hardest, and the Gamecocks were emerging as his clear favorite.

The athletic offensive tackle visited Columbia in November for USC's tilt against the Florida Gators, and he came away impressed with several aspects of South Carolina's program on that trip.

"I went to South Carolina to see their game (against Florida). I saw the weight room, the coaches' offices, and I got to meet Coach Steve Spurrier. He said I was good enough to play on either side of the ball and that I could help them out a lot. I had a good time."

Williams was originally scheduled to make a return trip to USC this weekend for his official visit, but he's rescheduled that trip for January.

Williams has been a three year starter on the gridiron and helped lead his Etowah team to a 7-3 record this fall, but he also excels on the basketball court and on the track and field team where he throws shot put. He bench presses 320 pounds and has been timed as low as 5.1 seconds in the forty yard dash.

Stay tuned to as we hope to catch up with Williams for a full interview on his decision to commit to South Carolina.
