Is Lucas nearing a decision?

Orangeburg-Wilkinson (Orangeburg, SC) 3-star linebacker Sterling Lucas made his official visit to South Carolina over the weekend to see what all the home state Gamecocks have to offer. Did Lucas enjoy his time in Columbia, and is he nearing a final decision on his college choice? Read inside to find out.

The 6'2", 220 pound Lucas, who is rated by as the no. 23 middle linebacker prospect in America, said he thoroughly enjoyed his trip to USC over the weekend and had a good time hanging out with several of the current players.

"It went good. I had a real good time," said Lucas. "I toured the campus, and they showed me the dorm rooms and the hangout spots and everything. I got a chance to spend some time with my host Eric Norwood and some of the other players. He showed me a good time and showed me around Columbia. It was a really good visit."

New Defensive Coordinator Ellis Johnson did not make it to Columbia in time to meet with Lucas in person, but he did speak with him on the phone and plans to visit the highly touted linebacker at his school on Monday.

"I got to talk with him over the phone. He's flying in later, and he's going to come by and see me at school tomorrow. When I talked with him, he seemed like a pretty cool guy. He was just telling me that he's really looking forward to coming to USC and doing some big things. He said he wants me to be a part of it."

According to Lucas, he learned a lot more about USC's campus and the surrounding areas while in Columbia.

"I've been there a couple times before, but I hadn't really seen the whole campus. They showed me the whole campus and gave me the tour this weekend. I learned a lot."

Following his trip to South Carolina, Lucas has decided to cancel his remaining visits and focus on three finalists.

"Right now I think I'm just going to narrow it down to the three schools that I've visited - South Carolina, North Carolina and North Carolina State. I like all three schools, and I'm just going to evaluate which school is the best for me. I'm going to think it over and make that final decision. I don't think I'm taking anymore visits."

Lucas said that he could have a final decision in the near future, and he knows what factors he will look at when choosing his college destination.

"It may be sometime by the end of the week. I might set up a press conference or something. I'm not really sure. I'm going to talk with my coaches and we'll work all that out," said Lucas. "It's going to come down to where I feel most comfortable at and the academics. Basically I'm going to choose the school where I feel like I really fit in and can really make a difference."
