Taylor pledges to USC

Beaufort (SC) standout defensive end Devin Taylor put an end to the recruiting process on Monday afternoon when he committed to the home state Gamecocks. Read inside for a full report on Taylor's decision to attend South Carolina.

Devin Taylor, who measures in at an athletic 6'6" and 220 pounds, committed to South Carolina shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Monday, choosing the Gamecocks over offers from Virginia Tech, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Duke and Kentucky. According to Beaufort Head Coach Mark Clifford, Taylor simply felt at home at USC.

"He's very comfortable there. He likes the campus, and a couple of his best friends are going there," said Clifford.

Taylor told GamecockAnthem.com in an earlier interview that he likes several factors about the South Carolina program.

"I like how everyone loves the players there. The fan support is great. They've got a good atmosphere," said Taylor. "They have a lot of talent on the team, and they‘re getting new academic facilities for the athletes and stuff. They also have my career that I want to major in - engineering."

Although Taylor is still relatively raw as a player, Clifford believes that his star pupil has the frame and athleticism to develop into a tremendous defensive lineman at South Carolina.

"I think he's going to be a monster. Everyone's talking about having his hand down and playing on the edge. He's got that (7-foot) wingspan, and he's always disrupting plays," he said. "I think everyone's planning on getting him on campus and beefing him up. He's going to be a big young'un. His daddy's about 270 I bet, and Devin's active so he's never going to get fat. I think he can get right up around there."

Taylor, who was recruited by Coach Shane Beamer for the Gamecocks, finished his senior year with 110 tackles, 10 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, 4 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery and 5 blocked kicks.

The Beaufort standout holds a 3.5 GPA and projects as a full qualifier. He becomes USC's twenty-first commitment in the 2008 recruiting class.
