Peach State DT has two on top

North Cobb (Ga.) defensive tackle Derrick Lott is one of the top defensive line prospects in the Peach State's class of 2009. The three-star lineman has visited three SEC schools this summer and currently has two at the top in the race for his services. Read inside to see if the Gamecocks made the cut and when the versatile lineman could make a commitment.

"South Carolina and UGA," the 6'4", 260-pound defensive lineman said when asked if he had a top group of schools. "I went to UGA and South Carolina, both for camps, and I've also been to Tennessee."

Lott claims offers from South Carolina, Georgia, Oklahoma State, Louisville, Michigan State, Ole Miss and UCF.

South Carolina cornerbacks coach Shane Beamer is recruiting Lott for the Gamecocks, and he likes what Beamer has told him about USC.

"He's nice. He's a real cool guy," Lott said. "He's just given me a lot of information about the background and history about the football team."

Following Lott's time at USC's camp earlier this month, he left Columbia impressed with the South Carolina campus and the planned additions to the Gamecocks' facilities.

"They showed us the campus," Lott said. "Some of the new things they were building (stood out), and just all their facilities and everything like that."

The Gamecocks have some help with Lott as he and former North Cobb standout and current Gamecock Eric Norwood remain good friends. The returning All-SEC defender has told Lott several positive aspects about the USC program.

"We still talk. He says it's a good program, and him playing there is good. And I would like it if I played there and everything like that."

Georgia offensive line coach Stacy Searels is recruiting Lott for the Bulldogs, and Lott stated that he enjoyed his time at UGA's camp as well.

"He's just as nice (as Beamer). And Coach Garner, the d-tackle coach is recruiting me, too," he said. "(Georgia's camp) was nice. We had a good camp."

Lott says he plans to take at least three official visits and that South Carolina, UGA and Louisville are guaranteed visits. Lott plans to narrow things down and possibly commit somewhere before the start of his senior season.

The nation's No. 40 ranked defensive tackle according to knows what he is looking for in a school when he takes his official visits.

"I'm just looking for a good school where I can be for four years, and where I can learn in school and not just about football."

For now, Lott says he is completely torn between UGA and USC.

"For both schools, I have been to their camps, I like their campuses, and their coaches are nice, so it's kind of neck and neck."

Lott is being recruited as a defensive end who could grow into a defensive tackle. He has played both positions at times during his high school career. The versatile lineman collected an estimated 70 tackles and 10 sacks during his junior season.
