Peach State WR pulls the trigger
The 6'0", 170 pound Smith, who runs a 4.49 second forty yard dash, first impressed the South Carolina coaches with an impressive showing at USC's June prospect camp. He picked up an offer from the Gamecocks following that strong camp performance, and he openly favored USC for over a month before deciding to pull the trigger and commit to South Carolina Friday night on his return trip to Columbia.
Smith, who grew up in Charleston, SC, is very familiar with the Gamecocks' program, and he's looking forward to being a part what Steve Spurrier is building at USC.
"I've been looking at South Carolina since I was young. I've been liking them ever since," said Smith. "I like Steve Spurrier. He's a great coach, and it'll be good to play for him. I feel it's the best place for me since I'm a wide receiver."
The Peach State product also credits his relationship with Steve Spurrier Jr. - his future position coach at USC - as another factor why he decided to commit to the Gamecocks.
"I like (Coach Spurrier Jr.). He is like me. He's got kind of the same mindset."
Smith, who describes himself as a "leader" on the field, plays in a Wing-T offense at Camden County, and only totaled 21 catches for 286 yards and 7 touchdowns in his junior season as a result. However, Camden County Head Coach Jeff Herron says not to let those numbers fool you, as he believes the Gamecocks got a steal in Smith.
"We're proud for DeAngelo, and think South Carolina got a player with huge upside potential to him," Herron told the Atlanta Journal Constitution in an earlier interview. "He's a 4.4 kid who runs good routes and catches the ball very well."
Smith made the All-Combine Team at the Jacksonville Scout.com/Under Armour Combine back in March. He chose South Carolina over offers from Illinois, Indiana, East Carolina, and others. He was also receiving strong interest from Florida and Georgia.
He becomes USC's 8th commitment in the 2009 recruiting class.
