Stanford Denies Permission To Speak With Kelly

Stanford Head Coach Buddy Teevens has turned-down a request from the USC coaching staff to speak with his wide receiver coach David Kelly. In an unusual move, considered somewhat overly protective, Stanford is apparently citing administration policy that disallows interviews of assistant coaches still under contract, especially prior to signing day. Plus information on the other two prominent candidates ...

We were unable to reach Buddy Teevens for his comments after repeated attempts, but according to published and broadcast reports Stanford has refused to give permission to The University of South Carolina to speak with wide receiver Coach David Kelly. This new policy is said to be a repercussion effect of last year's hire of then Stanford Head Coach Ty Willingham by Notre Dame.

How the denial will affect SC's coaching search is unknown, but Skip Holtz, who is in charge of the search, seems prepared to remain patient and take his time.

"It's not a thing where we're in a rush to hire anybody," Skip Holtz told The State Newspaper Wednesday. "Right now I don't know who I'd bring. There's about three or four that I like."

And Coach Skip told, "We're going to be methodical about this. I have several candidates. But the problem with the media attention right now is that the newspapers (and other media outlets) rushed to report Coach Kelly as the number one candidate. That's not fair because I actually have several candidates and if we end up hiring someone else other than their number one choice someone may be disappointed."

"We're going to get the right man for the job and we are in no hurry. We have several highly qualified candidates in mind," Holtz added. "When the time is right it will happen."

Other notable candidates that are being promently speculated about are:

Lawrence Dawsey - 35, played seven seasons in the NFL, where he caught 240 passes for 3,271 yards and six touchdowns. He was a third-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of Florida State who retired from the New Orleans Saints in 1999. Dawsey is a member of the Florida State Hall of Fame and is considered one of their All-Time greatest receivers.

Stan Hixon - coached wide receivers at South Carolina from 1989 to 1992 under then Head Coach Sparky Woods. Hixon coached former Gamecock great Robert Brooks and is currently the wide receiver coach and Assistant Head Coach at sister SEC school LSU. He knows the area well after his stint at USC and five years at Georgia Tech.
