Nation's No. 8 center tabs USC as leader

South Carolina Men's Basketball Coach Darrin Horn has been after Damontre Harris for a long time, and it seems that his perseverance has paid off as the four-star big man out of Trinity Christian HS in Fayetteville, NC is now openly favoring the Gamecocks. Read inside for all the details.

Damontre Harris, ranked as the No. 8 center nationally on, has seen his stock rise over the last year. As he's risen, there's always been one school right there with him.

"(South Carolina has) been with me from the beginning," Harris said. "They've been recruiting me the hardest from the beginning, before any other school. So you can say they are (the leader)."

Harris has several schools after him, but according to the 2010 big man, "VCU, UConn, South Florida, Florida and Boston College" are the other schools he's considering behind the Gamecocks.

Many coaches have called about Harris, according to his AAU coach with the N.C. Force, Rodney Scott. Scott even admitted that South Carolina has positioned themselves nicely with Harris.

Just like last weekend at the Big Shots Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C., college coaches have been following Harris around trying to persuade the big man to come to their schools, but among those coaches was South Carolina coach Darrin Horn for almost all of Harris' games at the tournament.

Another coach that was in attendance was VCU coach Shaka Smart, who was an assistant at Florida last year. Harris has a strong relationship with Smart, and was quoted admitting that losing Smart from Florida does takes away from them "just a little bit."

However, when Harris will make his collegiate decision is up in the air.

"I haven't made my mind up yet," the 6-foot-9 forward said. "I may make it before the basketball season... or after."
