Gamecocks Pick Up OLine Commitment

He is first team AP All-State in North Carolina, and now he is the newest Gamecock commitment ...

William Brown, Starmount High's NC All-State offensive lineman, committed to Lou Holtz during his visit to Columbia this weekend.

Brown released this statement after his visit.

"I really liked the University of South Carolina ... they have a great program, great team, great fans, and most importantly, great coaches. I called the coaches during the halftime show (of the Super bowl) to let them know. It has a good football program and they are on the rise. The stadium is huge and Lou Holtz is awesome. Academically, it has a top communications and Business school. The dorms are really good, too. The players are really great, they treated me like family and the coaches did too. I believe I can go there and succeed as a student and as a player. Columbia (SC) really reminded me of Buffalo (NY) in a way. They also got a hockey team (Columbia Inferno) which I learned to dig in NY. Overall, I think the school, football, and enviroment is a great fit for me. The icing on the cake is Coach Holtz. He is one of the greatest football coaches of all-time. He is also a great motivator and I think I could play for him and for USC."

But Brown is realistic about his chances at early playing time.

"I will probably redshirt, but may have a possibility of 2nd string, if I can come in strong and prove myself."

Brown is a formal ECU verbal, but waivered when Steve Logan resigned. "I had a great visit to ECU, but I felt USC had a little more to offer. Coach Thompson is great and his staff is great too, but the fit is at USC."
