Spurrier was very upbeat about the play of freshman quarterback Connor Shaw. Shaw was 5-8 in the scrimmage for 111 yards and a 17-yard touchdown pass to Nick Jones. Shaw also carried the ball twice for 19 yards and a touchdown.
"Connor Shaw played well again." Spurrier said. "Statistically, he's been our best quarterback on our team. Our other quarterbacks had too many sacks."
Shaw thinks that this was his best day as a Gamecock quarterback.
"I thought it was one of my best scrimmages since I've been here." Shaw said. "I had some pretty good scrambles and guys got open today. I still need to improve on some things in pretty much every aspect of my game. I'm coming out here doing the best I can and prepare myself for Southern Miss and the games ahead."
Spurrier is still reluctant to name a starter for the Southern Miss game, willing to give Stephen Garcia more opportunities to step up and take the starting position while also not writing off Shaw just because he's a freshman.
"We got two more weeks to make that decision." Spurrier said of naming a starting quarterback. "Connor has outplayed him (Garcia) in our scrimmages so we'll see how it goes the next two weeks. Garcia may play the best."
Spurrier continues to be encouraged by the progress the offensive line is making heading into the season.
"Work habits of our o-linemen are getting better." Spurrier said. "We only had 9 out here today. They went the whole way and none of them got hurt or tired so that's encouraging."
"I told TJ and some of the linemen that this was one of their best days," he said.
Though still 2 weeks away from the opener, Spurrier is ready to go and see what his team has.
"We'll be a different team this year." Spurrier said. "We may have a lot of different players in key positions, but we'll be a real different team. I'm fired up. I'm looking forward to two weeks from now and seeing how our guys play. We think our offense has got a chance to be much improved."
