Gamecocks get into mix with Fla. Guard

Shawn Smith entered the summer with no offers, and ended the summer with offers from five different conferences. Gamecock Anthem caught up with him to discuss which schools are in the mix.

When you heard the words "Who Dat" this summer around the AAU circuit, people weren't talking about the Super Bowl champs.

Those words could be heard when talking about 2012 guard Shawn Smith.

Smith entered the summer with no offers and a lot of interest. By the time the summer was over, the Arlington Country Day star was claiming offers from South Carolina, Cincinnati, Missouri, Florida State, Ole Miss, USF, Miami and UCF. Florida, Kansas State, West Virginia and DePaul were all also showing interest.

"Right now, my favorites are probably Florida State and Cincinnati," Smith said.

But a recent trip to South Carolina and an upcoming trip to Ole Miss could change all of that.

"I don't really know too much about South Carolina," he said, "but I like the school and I like South Carolina.

Smith was scheduled to take an unofficial to Ole Miss this week. "I don't know too much about them, but I could like them too."

As far as his relationship with the Gamecocks, everything is relatively new.

"It was some time during July during Nationals (in Orlando)," Smith said of his offer from South Carolina coach Darrin Horn. "He called after one of my games in Nationals, and he wanted me to take an unofficial visit."

About, three weeks later, Smith found his way to Columbia for an unofficial visit.

"It was (two weeks ago) — Saturday," the 6-foot-4, 190-pound guard said of his visit. "I liked it a lot. I liked the campus. He said they've had a 100 percent graduation rate.

"Coach Horn, once you get to know him, he's a real nice guy. And the rest of the staff, they made me feel real comfortable. I'm really really feeling South Carolina."

Most schools are recruiting Smith at the position he feels is natural to him — shooting guard; however, some schools see him as a combo guard.

"(Coach Horn) said I can be a really good shooting guard," Smith said, "but he'd also want me to play a little bit of the one."
