Union Grove's D.J. White has been busy this spring training and working out, all while participating in camps and taking visits.
"I'm just getting ready for spring football, I'm real excited and have been waiting for it the whole offseason," said White. "I've been working out, doing speed and agility training and lifting weights and visiting different schools."
The 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback from McDonough, GA finished his junior year with 20-tackles, three-interceptions along with 13-pass deflections, and at the recent NIKE camp ran a 4.43-40 and earned the defensive back MVP honors.
"I'm a very physical player. I'm pretty good at press coverage and off coverage," said White. "I can play press and get physical and have good ball skills when the ball is in the air. I can recognize plays and have good instincts."
White has also been busy taking visits different schools including trips to UGA, GT, UT, UF, South Carolina, Clemson, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma. He recently took a trip to Tampa to check out what the Bulls had to offer.
"I took a trip to South Florida and that was real nice," said White. "Of course being in Florida they have great weather so they have that going for them. They're a great school academically and they're up and coming. They're going to be good."
The Union Grove cornerback made the trip with his family and got to take the tour of the facilities, meet the coaching staff and several players and was impressed with what he saw.
"I checked out the weight room and all the facilities. I got to meet all the coaches and got to talk with Coach Skip Holtz, and overall it was a good visit," said White. "The facilities are real nice and top of the line. They're right up there with all the top notch colleges. They got a nice weight room, great practice fields and have plans to build a lot more things including an indoor practice facility."
White has never been to Tampa before and really enjoyed
"The campus was real nice, and the environment was great," said White. "They told me it's the ninth largest campus in the country. South Florida was real nice and like I said the weather was just great. It was a real good time and I really liked it."
USF offensive line coach Steve Shankweiler has been White's recruiting coordinator and the Bulls coach he's spoken to the most.
"He's a pretty cool coach," said White. "He's very straight forward and I like him as a person as well as a coach."
While on the visit White had the opportunity to talk with the Bulls head Coach Skip Holtz.
"Talking with coach Holtz was great," said White. "He's got a great persona about him. He's a great man and takes care of his athletes as well. He's put together a great coaching staff too."
"No I don't have a leader or a top five or anything like that right now," said White. "I'm still evaluating everyone at this point."
White does know what he's looking for in a program when it comes time to make his choice.
"I'm looking for a school that academically has a great networking base and somewhere where I can hook up with people for internships," said White. "I'm looking at what type of defensive scheme they run and where I'm at on their board. Another big thing is the feel I get for the school and how comfortable I am with the area, and with the coaches."
"It's not a huge deal, but I do look at depth charts," said white.
Another area he's focusing on is what type of defensive scheme the program runs, and several fit what he's looking for.
"I'm looking for a very aggressive defensive scheme, mixing it up between off, press and man," said White. "From what I've asked about and been told, I know South Florida is aggressive. South Carolina runs a 4-2-5, but is pretty aggressive. Pretty much Georgia Tech and a few of the SEC schools are aggressive too."
The standout corner did say that the schools that offered hold an edge because he plans on making an early decision.
"I do plan on committing sometime this summer after spring practice," said White. "So those seven schools are the ones I'm focusing on right now. I'll discuss it with my parents and see what school is the best for me."
With a big decision looming White and on the horizon White said he's focusing on his team.
"I'll make a decision sometime this summer. Probably in May or June," said White. "Right now I'm focusing on spring practice with my high school. That's my main focus right now."
