Update: RB Blakely will Take Official to USF

Yesterday Mike Blakely, the former 4-star Manatee back that is looking to transfer from Florida visited with USF head Coach Skip Holtz for a face-to-face meeting. The visit went well enough that the 5-foot-9, 198 pound Blakely will take an official visit to Tampa this weekend.

We said yesterday that running back Mike Blakely, the former 4-star Manatee back that went to Florida, but is transferring after one semester was visiting with USF head Coach Skip Holtz. The USF coaches wanted to get him up there for a face-to-face talk and that went well enough that Blakely will take an official visit to Tampa this weekend, his head coach Joe Kinnan said this morning.

"Yes Mike visited USF unofficially yesterday to speak with Coach Holtz," said Kinnan, who said he hasn't spoken to Blakely about the visit, but heard it well from the South Florida coaches. "He's going to take an official there this weekend."

During his original recruitment the 5-foot-9, 198-pound former 4-star running back only used one official visit and that was to Auburn before eventually committing to the Gators and has four available officials that he can use in finding his new home.

"Mike went to Auburn and that was his only official he took last season," said Kinnan. "He's going to take a few this time around."

Blakely is strongly considering USF and with his visit Monday and an upcoming official this weekend, that's apparent. There is a bevy of other schools pursuing Blakely, including UNC, UCF, and Southern Cal, but where he'll use his remaining officials is unknown at this time.

"I can't let you know at this time until he tells me which he's decided on," said Kinnan. "We'll sit down and figure it out this week."

Blakely is taking his time and using these officials this time around to try and find the best fit, but his former coach alluded that he probably wouldn't take all four remaining.

"I doubt he'll take all four," said Kinnan. "I think he'll take at least two or three."

While the other schools he'll visit aren't clear, there's no question that USF is definitely in the running for the former star that was the rated the No. 10 back by Scout coming out of high school.

Blakely was a former 4-star prospect ranked the No. 10 back by Scout and the No. 7 running back coming out of high school by ESPN.com and ranked 74th in the ESPNU 150. He would have four years of eligibility wherever he ends up and for now it's a waiting game to see what he chooses to do, but an answer should come within the next few weeks and in time for summer classes.
