The USF staff has a penchant of discovering young talented prospects and one of them is Winter Parks Blake McClain, a 2013 defensive back prospect that transferred from Oviedo and has been getting a lot of attention after stand-out performances in recent combines, 7on7 tournaments and camps.

"Its great being at Winter Park, it's a good environment for me to be in," said McClain. "Its fun, the coaches are great and I'm learning a lot more than I did at Oviedo. I'm also getting better recruiting attention."

The 6-foot, 185 pound athlete played cornerback, safety and a little receiver as a sophomore at Oviedo, recording 4 interceptions, 68 tackles, 4 TFLs, 6 pass break-ups, and also scored a receiving touchdown.

"Defensive back is my primary position, but I also play some at wide receiver. I play safety, but coaches tell me they can move to corner or safety," said McClain. "I'm a smart player, I can read defenses well, I can react quickly to the play on the field. I'm also a sure tackler and I can cover. I want to work on getting bigger, my speed and my agility."

Since he transferred from Oviedo, McClain has had an impressive this spring, first being named to the Shuman's National Underclassman All-Combine team in Orlando. Then followed it up great at the USF sling and shoot, picking off passes right and left and had two picks in the title game, the last one being the game and tourney clincher.

"That was a great tournament for me and my team," said McClain. "I got there late after taking the SAT on Saturday, but had a good showing. I think I had 8 picks through the weekend and two in the championship game. It felt great to win and it was a lot of fun."

On the recruiting front programs are showing interest in the 2013 defensive back prospect and recently McClain received his first offer and a BCS one at that.

"Things are going good, I'm receiving interest from USF, UCF, and Tennessee," said McClain. "USF has been showing a lot of interest and offered me a scholarship."

"Getting that first offer from USF felt great and I felt real excited to get it," said McClain. "It just makes me want to work harder to get more. I'm also glad it came from USF because I like them a lot."

The staff has been recruiting McClain for some time and the offer has been in works for some time.

"They've been talking to me for awhile and at their 7on 7 told me that they've been watching me and were going to offer me down the road," said McClain. "Then I went to their SuperBull camp and they told me to call them, and when I did they offered me."

McClain talks about his SuperBull experience, and getting to work with the coaching staff.

"It was a great experience and there were a lot of elite players there. It wasn't a huge camp so we got a lot of time with the staff and they got to really see us perform during the one-on-ones and things like that," said McClain. "I got to learn a lot while I was there, techniques to play man coverage, how to stay on high shoulder, and a lot of other stuff. It was real good."

"I really liked getting to work with the USF coaching staff," said McClain. "I learned a lot about how they coach, I like them a lot as a staff and felt a good bond with them. We were working, talking, laughing, and I got a good feel for them."

The Winter Park standout got a firsthand experience of where the Bulls play their home games and liked it.

"The stadium was real nice and it's big," said McClain. "They gave us a tour of everything, got to see the locker rooms and all that. We got to come out through the tunnel and playing on a pro field was awesome."

Even though his team played the 7on7 at USF, he really didn't get to really see the school.

"I really didn't see a lot of the campus or the facilities. I just saw the basketball dome and the practice facility they're finishing up," said McClain. "What I saw looked nice and I hear a lot of good things. I want to go back to take a tour and see everything they got."

Besides the offer from South Florida, McClain says that more could be coming soon.

"UCF and Tennessee have been talking to me and both said they'll offer me down the road," said McClain. "My coaches said that things will really start to heat up as the season gets closer."

It may be way early for the rising junior, but he already has a short list of schools that stand out to him.

"I probably have a top five right now," said McClain. "I like USF, Louisville, Tennessee, UCLA, and Florida State."

McClain talks about what he likes about USF and why he has them among his top schools.

"USF is a great program and I like them a lot," said McClain. "They got a good staff and they're really starting to come along as a football team and are starting to be one of the elite programs. I also like the conference they play in and they're close to home in Florida."

The rising junior is just starting the process of seeing schools and plans on being busy this summer, beginning next week.

"I'm going to be visiting Tennessee next week and then I'll be going to UAB," said McClain. "I definitely want to get back over to USF and check out what they got. I like them a lot and they're high on my list."

Even though he's new at Winter Park McClain is hoping he can help the team that went undefeated during the regular season get farther in the play-offs.

"We're all working real hard as a team," said McClain. "We got a great squad and want to win State this year. That's our goal."
