Bulls ready for first road test at Villanova

The USF basketball team is preparing to square off against Villanova for Stan Heath's first BIG EAST road test of the season tonight.

The USF basketball team is preparing to square off against Villanova for Stan Heath's first BIG EAST road test of the season.

This will be the seventh meeting between the two BIG EAST foes, and while Villanova leads the series 5-1, the teams have split the last two meetings. . Villanova won last year's regular-season meeting 83-71, with the Bulls getting their first win over the Wildcats in the first round of the Big East conference tournament in 2011 with a 70-69 win in at Madison Square Garden.

The Bulls come into the match-up fresh off a 67-65 win over Rutgers at the St. Pete Times Forum. Freshman Anthony Collins posted a career-high 10 assists while also hitting the game-winning bucket with 12.7 seconds remaining in the game. Senior Ron Anderson Jr. led the team in scoring with 15 points while picking up six offensive rebounds and taking three charges. Senior Augustus Gilchrist just missed a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

USF has been strong defensively so far this and come in ranked third in the BIG EAST in scoring defense, allowing just 58.3 points per game. Through the first 15 games, the Bulls have held six opponents to at least 10 points under their season scoring average entering the game, including two out of the last three opponents. USF has also been stingy in the first half of games, holding 10-straight opponent to 30 or less points in the first half.

USF comes into the game 8-7 overall (1-1 in the Big East), while Villanova is 7-7 (0-2 in the Big East). The Wildcats are has been solid at home, with a 6-0 record at home while the Bulls are 0-6 on the road. Statistically Villanova holds an edge in rebounding, 40 per game to 33 per game, and in scoring 72 pts per game to 61 pts per game.

"I'm really proud of the effort and will that our guys had against Rutgers. Now we have to take that and continue to build," said Coach Stan Heath. "Getting a road win is something we haven't done yet and the way we're playing right now, it's something we're capable of heading into this game against Villanova, which will be another tough test for us."
