With Signing Day approaching Skip Holtz and staff is trying to close out the 2012 recruiting class. USF already has 15 commitments so far and with only a few remaining scholarships left, they're looking for the best player that fits their needs. With last year's leading rusher Darrell Scott leaving early to go pro, the staff is looking at several running backs that can fill the void. One player that may fit that bill is Michael Pierre, a 5'11, 205 pound JUCO back at Golden West College in California.
In early December, Pierre visited New Mexico State and committed, but didn't sign with NMSU during the junior college signing Period (Dec. 21-Jan 15), as he was still looking for the best fit.
"I already gradated, but I wasn't sure what college to go to, so didn't sign with anybody," said Pierre . "I've just been working out and trying to find the best school for me to go to."
The 5-foot-11, 205 pound prospect was Golden West's leading rusher as a freshman with 420 yards rushing and three touchdowns on just 84 attempts. At the JCFootball.com SoCal combine Pierre posted a 4.4 -40 yard dash, a 4.12 agility shuttle and also had a 32 inch vertical During his sophomore campaign Pierre rushed for 780 yards and scored 6 touchdowns and was a Southern California Football Conference second team selection.
Pierre is also a track guy and at the 2011 Southern California track championship posted a 10.9 100 meter, ran a 22.65 in the 200, and a 5.43 long jump.
"My best assets are my speed, explosiveness, and my ability to read holes," said Pierre . "I can find the hole and take it to the house when I find an opening. I also love to hit, whether it's on offense or special teams. I don't shy away from contact."
"The schools that have been showing me the most interest lately is South Florida, New Mexico State , ECU, and University of New Mexico ," said Pierre . "Those are the ones showing the most interest. I have offers from New Mexico State , University of Mexico , and SJS, but I think USF is going to offer me and so is ECU."
In December, he took official visits to San Jose State and New Mexico State , but has been getting several in-home visits lately as schools are trying to get him in for a visit.
"New Mexico came by yesterday, ECU is trying to get me to come on a visit, "said Pierre . Actually South Florida Head Coach Skip Holtz is coming by to visit me today. I'm real excited for that visit to happen."
Pierre said he's been in contact with USF offensive coordinator and running backs coach Todd Fitch and his recruitment has picked up steam recently.
"They've been talking to me for a bit now, but they had a back leave early and the interest in me really picked up after that," said Pierre . "I have a high interest in them and want to find out more."
"I don't know a lot about them, but I do know USF is a big school with a very good football program," said Pierre . "I know Jason Pierre-Paul, and he liked it there so I think I will to. We have a connection because we're both Haitians. They have a lot of Haitians on their roster, so I think I'll like it there."
With signing day approaching Pierre is trying to find a home and has two schools sticking out as his favorites.
"I have high interest in all school interested in me," said Pierre . "But my top two schools are USF and New Mexico State . I have high interesting both of them."
Pierre said that he's excited for the USF staff's visit, and hopes they offer, but isn't sure what he'll do if that happens.
"I really hope they offer, but I think I may still have to think things over because I still like New Mexico State too," said Pierre . "I may wait until signing day to make my choice, but we'll see what happens.
