Local DB Griffin feeling the hometown Bulls

Shaquill Griffin, Lakewood's standout defensive back was a key piece in helping Team Tampa win the IMG 7on7 title. The 6'1, 197 pound prospect, who's approaching 20 offers, talks about who's standing out, where the Bulls stand and more.

Lakewood defensive back Shaquill Griffin already has double digit offers, so he wasn't out to impress anyone during the IMG tourney this weekend, but was a key piece to Team Tampa's defense, helping them to win the coveted Madden 7on7 title.

"The IMG tourney was great, we went against some great competition, but Team Tampa was the best and took home the crown," said Griffin. "I think I did pretty well, had a couple interceptions, a big knock out play, and after that teams got scared to go across the middle and several pass break-ups. "

As a junior Griffin already caught coach's attention and after receiving his first offer from USF, is now approaching twenty, including USF, West Virginia, Vanderbilt, Illinois, and Boston College, among others.

"I'm up to 18-19 offers right now and have several schools sticking out to me," said Griffin. "Right now I'm looking at USF, West Virginia, Arkansas, and FIU. "

Shaquill and his twin brother Shaquem have made it known that they want to play together at the next level and the Bulls are haven't yet offered his brother, are recruiting both.

"USF has that family vibe, and we're looking for that team that will let me us stick together," said Griffin. "As soon as they seen my brother play in person, they really liked him and are recruiting both of us, and USF is the type of team I'm looking for."

The Lakewood standout talks about what he likes about the hometown team.

"The opportunity to stay home is very appealing, they were talking to us about after you win games, you get to go home and see your parents and that's a cool extra," said Griffin. "They also have that family vibe going on over there, and I like the way they fly around on defense."

Griffin's former teammate Jaquez Jenkins is a current USF defensive back and he knows a good amount about the hometown team.

"I've visited USF several times and really like it, especially the players and the atmosphere. The players they got seem really good and that they like it there," said Griffin. "I like the coaching staff and the head coach. I can see myself being very comfortable there."

The physical defensive back plans on being busy this summer, and with combines and visits.

"This week we're going to Texas for the USA under 19 team trials," said Griffin. "I'm going to take a visit to West Virginia at the end of July and I'm also thinking about taking a trip to Arkansas this summer."

Griffin said he doesn't have an exact date when he'll make his choice but is thinking about doing it before the season. He does know the factors that he's considering in making his choice.
"I'm looking at my major because academics come first and I want to go into the medical field," said Griffin. "Another big thing is the environment and if I can be comfortable with the coaches, because I'm going to be there for four years, and also the overall atmosphere."

At, 6-foot-1, 197-pounds, Griffin can play any defensive back position and as a junior had 4 interceptions with 37 tackles.

"I love to press, and love to put my hands on people," said Griffin. "I'm aggressive, physical, can cover and have great endurance. I never get tired."

Griffin who is known as a physical DB, shows off his cover skills and speed at the IMG 7on7 last weekend.
