Alonzo Hampton Hired as DB Coach

Willie Taggart has gone to one of his former Western Kentucky assistants to fill the vacant DB coach position.

A month after dismissing veteran DB coach Ron Cooper, Willie Taggart has dialed up one of his former assistants at Western Kentucky, Alonzo Hampton, to take the position.

A native of Warren, Arkansas and graduate of Louisiana-Monroe, Hampton has roughly a decade of coaching experience. After serving as an assistant coach/defensive coordinator at FCS Arkansas-Pine Bluff from 2006-2010, he joined Taggart’s coaching staff at Western Kentucky in 2011. While there, he helped orchestrate a unit that rose to 34th in the nation in pass defense, anchored by current Oakland Raider safety Jonathan Dowling. Since Taggart’s departure to USF, he’s assumed the role of DB coach at Tift County High School in Georgia.

The move is another in an offseason filled with coaching changes for the Bulls. This comes just a few days after the departure of RB coach Telly Lockette to Gary Anderson’s staff at Oregon State. It remains to be seen if Taggart hiring someone who spent the past two years coaching high school will pay dividends in new defensive coordinator Tom Allen’s system.
