Friday Night Lights: Zephyrhills vs. Land O' Lakes

USFnation.com brings you a new feature we will have throughout the high school football season. Each week we will be at a high school game around the state. This week we were live at Zephyrhills to see them take on Land O' Lakes. Read further to get a game re-cap and take a look at the photo gallery.

In the first installment of USFnation.com's "Friday Night Lights" feature, we were out for the Land O' Lakes vs. Zephyrhills game, at Zephyrhills. Each team has a couple top area recruits. Everyone knows about Caz Piurowski, who committed to Florida State about six weeks ago. There are also some other recognizable names on O' Lakes, Joe and John Weatherford. That would be Florida State's Drew Weatherford's little brothers. Joe is following in his brothers footsteps by winning the starting job as O' Lakes starting quarterback as a junior. While sophomore John is a hard running FB/RB. Then there is Develin Robinson junior receiver who is not as well known but will be a kid to remember for next year's recruiting class.

The Zephyrhills team has a receiver you may have heard of by the name of Bryan Thomas. He is one of the top prospects in the Tampa Bay area. The senior WR/DB currently has offers from Ohio State, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. Last year he finished the season with 1,300 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns, along with 93 tackles and 3 picks on defense. Thomas is 6-foot-2 and has a reported 40 time of 4.39. Other guys I feel will be prospects in the coming year or two will be sophomore Chris Henry, WR/DB and junior QB/DB Sederrik Cunningham.

Now for some game action:

The contest started with Land O' Lakes returning the kick and mounting a long, run dominating drive capped off by a 2 yard touchdown run by Evan Keel. Keel and John Weatherford wore down the Zephyrhills defensive line on a 6 straight run play drive. With the pounding style of John Weatherford and the speed of Keel, O'Lakes went up 6-0 after missing the extra point.

On Zephyrhills first series they went 3-and-out, and O'Lakes received the punt at their 35 yard line. Then they went straight back to pounding the ball up the middle. Zephyrhills stopped them but failed to catch the punt cleanly and gave it back to O'Lakes on their own 20-yard line. From there it only took 5 plays for John Weatherford to muscle his way in giving the O'Lakes Gators a 12-0 lead after another failed extra point attempt.

Just when the game looked like it was out of reach for Zephyrhills, quarterback Sederrik Cunningham hooked up with Bryan Thomas for a 56-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the drive. Thomas outran the Gator secondary and Cunningham hit him in stride down the right sideline.

However that would be all the scoring for Zephyrhills. While the Gators would go on to score another 22 points making the final score 34-7. Evan Keel added two more touchdowns with a 22-yard and a 4-yard run. Then the final TD came on an odd play where Develin Robinson out jumped teammate Caz Piurowski, coming down with the catch and running 30 more yards for a long 65-yard touchdown.

Zehyrhills did have a couple long drives they just could not finish them. I was very impressed with the mobility and arm strength of quarterback Sederrik Cunningham. Also Chris Henry was a constant threat at breaking a deep one. He caught a lot of 5 to 6 yard passes and turned them into 15 to 20 yard gains.

After the game I had a chance to catch up with the winning quarterback, Joe Weatherford. Weatherford was 7-11 for 190 yards and a touchdown.

"We thought we were going to get rain so we prepared to really run the ball."

Weatherford on the passing game.

"Caz and Develin are my main guys and sometimes they make me look better than I'm playing." Adding, "this is the first game and I did alright but I defiantly need to play a lot better."

"I'm glad we got this first win and hopefully keep the momentum."
