On Friday night Jefferson tried to comeback after a tough loss to Armwood and knock-off undefeated Hillsborough. Hillsborough led by quarterback Jarred Fayson has earned the right of being called the top team in the area, came ready to play Friday night.
However, early on it wasn't Fayson leading the team, it was running back Jimmy Sapp carrying the load. Standing at only 5-foot-8, 190 pounds, Sapp rushed for 70 yards on the games opening drive and scored on a 3 foot plunge into the end zone.
With Hillsborough up by seven and the Jefferson ground game not really getting rolling, quarterback Stephen Garcia took over. He ran two consecutive times and on the second run he broke it open. Garcia scrambled outside and took it straight up the sideline for a 74 yard touchdown run.
After a couple three-and-outs by both teams Hillsborough went back on the offensive this time it was a combination of great plays by Jarred Fayson, he ran twice for about 30 yards and also completed a 15 yard pass before running it in on his own to put Hillsborough back on top 14 to 7.
By halftime, Hillsborough and Jefferson would each put a score up on the board, making it a 21-14 game going into the locker room.
Late in the third quarter Jefferson had their last real chance to take this game when on fourth and goal Stephen Garcia was intercepted in the end zone. The play was a momentum shifter and after that it was all Fayson and Sapp. They added two more scores making the final 35-14 Hillsborough High School.
Jarred Fayson finished with 183 yards rushing and three touchdowns, its no wonder he is one of the top quarterback recruits in the state.
In the end Jefferson once again couldn't stop the running game of their opponents. This time it was Hillsborough High School who improved their record to 5-0. Jefferson now 3-2 will be fine, and with a quarterback who is only a junior, look for this team to play its best football later on in the season when it counts.
