USF Recruiting Guide '05 (Offense)

Here is an early position-by-position break-down of possible USF recruits for the '05 class. Today's story includes the offensive side of the ball, be sure to check back for the defensive break-down.

This is a very important recruiting year the University of South Florida, it's their first year in a BCS conference but it could also be their year to make a bowl. All eyes will be on the Bulls to see how they finish out the season. Not only are they receiving more attention from the national media, but top recruits are also noticing.

Here is a position-by-position breakdown of who the Bulls will be pursuing up until signing day. This list is not set in stone and there will probably be more kids added to it once the coaches can get on the road and recruit.

Quarterback: Although most fans are hoping USF brings in a savior at this position, they need to wait another year. With all the current quarterbacks returning after this year, USF is not a place a lot of high school QB's are looking at. As of now the Bulls have one verbal commit from Alwan Lee of Booker T. Washington in Miami. USF is one of the only schools recruiting him strictly as a QB. However, next year there are two great quarterbacks in the Bulls own backyard that you should be familiar with. John Brantley or Trinity Catholic and Stephen Garcia from Jefferson High School in Tampa. Both of them are true quarterbacks.

Running Back: This is a big year to get a quality running back, with Andre Hall graduating that leaves Ricky Ponton and Chad Simpson in the back field to carry the load. The Bulls already grabbed 2,000 yard back Dexter McCluster from Largo, but they are still looking for more. Brandon James from Saint Augustine High School has an offer and USF is also interested in two backs from New Jersey, Kee-Ayre Griffin and Vince Davidson. However neither of them have received an offer from USF.

Wide Receiver: USF has a plethora of young receivers already on the roster, plus the addition of Amp Hill from LSU only adds to the log jam at that position. However, the Bulls are still expected to add one more. As of now I have a feeling that Carlton Mitchell, 6-foot-4 185 WR from Gaither High School in Tampa could be the one. From talking with him, he has shown a strong interest in playing for the home team. Also Tertavian Ingram from Jefferson has received a lot of interest from USF. I have seen him a couple times, but I was not overly impressed. There are also a couple sleepers out there, first is Carlton Salters of North Florida Christian was highly touted going into his senior year, but he hasn't had many catches this year due to his teammate running back Marcus Sims. Sims gets a majority of the touches resulting in lower numbers for Salters. Early on he was getting looks from the Big 3, but now interest has leveled off. Another Tallahassee sleeper is Damario Waymun of Rickards. If USF were to shock the state they would get Sam Shields of Sarasota Booker, he is a Miami commit and the Bulls really like this kid. However I think they only have a 5-10% chance of getting him.

Tight End: There really are not many true tight ends out there. The best is probably Trent Pupello of Jefferson. He has an offer from USF and I talked to him at the Tallahassee combine where he told me he is taking a serious look at the Bulls. His favorite as of now is still FSU but they already signed two tight ends and that may be enough to sway him to stay home.

Can the Bulls convince Pupello to stay at home?

Offensive Line: This is one of the most intriguing positions for recruiting this year. There are two big time players showing interest in USF. The first is the giant from Jefferson Daron Rose and the second is Jim Barrie from Berkley Prep. Rose is a left tackle while Barrie is a guard. Barrie will be a great lineman down the road, but Rose is the type of player that could come in and compete as a freshman. Then there is Mark Jones RG from Port Orange he and LT Hector Hernandez of Naples both could commit before signing day. The reach of this position is Kevin McCaskill, Center from Godby High School. The reason I say he is a reach and not Daron Rose is because Rose is showing a lot of interest in USF. McCaskill is a four year starter and has 6 offers including Louisville and Illinois, but look for Florida or Miami to possibly come in late.
