That's all but certainly true. The Bulls were picked to come in last this season, and find themselves alone in last place at 0-5 in the league. Moreover, a series of injuries has left the team with only seven scholarship players.
The loss to the Pirates was particularly painful. South Florida led by 12 in the final four minutes, only to blow the lead at the end of regulation. With three starters having fouled out, the undermanned Bulls couldn't pull out the win in overtime.
On the positive side, the Bulls have had chances to win four of their five league games, with the only blowout a 19-point loss to St. John's. South Florida has been respectable, and may win a Big East game or two this season, but probably not enough to see the New York City sites up close in March.
Notes and Quotes:
--The 89 points South Florida scored against Seton Hall marked the most since the Bulls went for 91 against Jacksonville on Nov. 25.
--Melvin Buckley, James Holmes, Solomon Jones and McHugh Mattis have combined for 92 percent of South Florida's points and 85 percent of its rebounds over the team's first five Big East games.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Part of me is furious. As you can expect, I'm extremely disappointed. I thought we had more opportunities to win than any of the [other] Big East games, but we didn't capitalize." -- USF coach Robert McCullum after the loss to Seton Hall.
PLAYER ROTATION: Usual Starters -- G Collin Dennis, G James Holmes, F Melvin Buckley, F Melvyn Richardson, C Solomon Jones. Key Subs -- C Chris Capko, G/F McHugh Mattis.
Georgetown 50, South Florida 47
Seton Hall 94, South Florida 89 (OT)
vs. Villanova, Tuesday, Jan. 24.
at Cincinnati, Tuesday, Jan. 31.
vs. DePaul, Friday, Feb. 3.
KEYS: South Florida has been close against almost every team it's lost to this season, but will need a repeat of their offensive explosion vs. Seton Hall to have a chance against Villanova.
--F Zaronn Cann is officially out for the season. The freshman injured his left knee against Florida Atlantic on Dec. 15, and has a history of knee problems. Because he only played in four games, he is expected to maintain four years of eligibility.
--G Collin Dennis moved into the starting lineup against Seton Hall, replacing Chris Capko.
