White Downs Green 36-10 In Annual Spring Game

TAMPA, Fla. (April 15, 2006) -- Senior Walt Smith scored two rushing touchdowns Saturday night at Raymond James Stadium, helping the White team down the Green squad 36-10 in the University of South Florida football team's annual spring game.

Smith was forced into extended action due to a depleted running back corps and responded with 66 yards on 19 carries, including a 31-yard scamper late in the fourth quarter.  Senior signal caller Pat Julmiste threw for a TD and ran for another for the White team, which led from start to finish.

"I am really encouraged by what I saw out there tonight and I told the players that," head coach Jim Leavitt said.  "This has been the most physical spring we have had here and you could see that with the hitting that went on out there tonight and the way the guys ran around."

Junior defensive back Mike Jenkins opened the scoring on just the second play from scrimmage, intercepting quarterback Matt Grothe's first offering of the night and returning it 29 yards for the touchdown.

Julmiste added a one-yard scoring plunge, set up by a long run of his own earlier in the drive, and an eight-yard TD run by Smith gave White a commanding 20-0 advantage early in the first half.

The Green squad finally got on the board with a 33-yard field goal from Mike Benzer, but missed a golden opportunity to find the endzone.  Freshman Jerome Murphy's first of two interceptions on the night gave Green the ball at the White 15-yard line.  Despite the short field, the offense was unable to cross the goal line.

"If you picture this team as one unit, not split up like it was tonight, consider the fact that eight potential starters were out with injury and we have 35 guys coming in next year including preferred walkons - we have a chance to be pretty good," Leavitt said.

Freshman wideout Ean Randolph hauled in a Julmiste pass for a 30-yard TD receptions just before halftime and the advantage was 27-3 at the intermission.

The Green team finally found the endzone in the second half, when Grothe hooked up with tight end Cedric Hill on a 25-yard scoring play.

A safety by senior Tavarious Robinson set the score at 29-10 and Smith's 31-yard TD run in the final minute capped the scoring for the White team.
