USF Falls 3-1 To Notre Dame In Opening Game

CLEARWATER, Fla. (May 23, 2006) – The University of South Florida baseball team (23-34) dropped its first game of the 2006 BIG EAST Championship in a closely contested final game of the tournament's first day, falling to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (42-14-1), 3-1.

Junior Casey Hudspeth suffered his seventh loss of the season, despite pitching a strong seven innings of action versus the Irish. Hudspeth struck out three batters while allowing no walks. He allowed two runs on six hits in his 16th start of the season. Nick Manganaro saw relief action, throwing two-thirds of an inning before Chase Lirette registered the final out of inning.


Josh LeRoy and Carlos Armstrong led the USF Bulls with two hits each, accounting for half of USF's total hits. LeRoy recorded his third double of the season, driving in a run. Armstrong notched two singles – his second multiple-hit contest of his career.


South Florida will face the No. 4 seed St. John's Red Storm (37-18) on Wednesday, May 24 in an elimination game. First pitch is scheduled at 1 p.m.
