With Cedric Hill showing signs that he may never be the tight end the team originally envisioned, this will be a crucial year to land a top tight end, and A.J. Johnson looks to be on the top of that list thus far.

At 6-foot-4 and 232 pounds the pass-catching tight end from Cardinal Gibbons in Fort Lauderdale already has a slew of offers. Some of his top offers include FIU, FAU, UCF, UConn, Toledo and USF.

Last season Johnson had 18 catches for 326 yards and a touchdown. This season he hopes to blow those numbers away.

"I've done a lot of work this offseason to improve my overall game." Adding, "I've done route running work, but I've also done a lot of blocking drills."

One thing Johnson is doing to improve his blocking is building strength. He said he gets up every morning at 4:30 AM to get a workout in before summer school starts. Then after school he's been working with a speed coach, mostly to improve his agility.

He has also been going to camps. Last weekend he went to Auburn and South Carolina to attend one-day camps. In May, when coach Leavitt came to his school and offered him, he was also invited to USF's camp later this summer.

"I've never been to the South Florida campus, so when I go to the camp I'll also use it as a chance to check-out the school."

Johnson says he's in no rush to make a decision and will probably take his 3 official visits before choosing a school. Stay with USFNation as we follow him through the recruiting process.
