USF Bulls Football Class of 2005: Revisited

Mike Benzer K (Sophomore) (Lyman HS) - He opened his freshmen season as a starter for the Penn State game, but missed all three of his field goal attempts and was 2 of 3 on PAT's. He was then replaced by Kyle Bronson for the season. Benzer and walk-on Justin Teachy battled all spring and will compete again this summer for the starting kicker job, possibly with incoming kicker Delbert Alvarado, and preferred walk-on Ilia Petrov.

Jarriett Buie DE (Junior) (Armwood HS) - Actually signed in 2004 but was academically ineligible. 2005 was supposed to be his year but a injury suffered during the preseason caused him to redshirt for the year. He had a good spring playing mostly with the second team, and will compete this summer for a position on the defensive line.

Ben Busbee TE (McGill-Toolen HS) - He was a redshirt for 2005. In the past year he put on 5 pounds (245) and during the spring played TE and long snapper and will compete this summer at both positions.

Pat Carter WR/QB (Lakewood HS)(Georgia Tech) - Intended to transfer to USF in 2005, but instead transferred to Louisville and sat out the 2005 year.

Gene Coleman LB (Pearl River CC) - He was a JUCO transfer, however he never qualified academically and is not with team.

Antonio Cox DB (RS Freshman)( Killian HS) - Was a redshirt for 2005. During spring practice was rotated in as a backup corner, until he broke his hand the last week of spring, a full recovery is expected, but with the returning secondary he might not see much action.

Antwane Cox DB (RS Freshman)( Killian HS) - Was a redshirt for 2005 and will have to fight  for a position with his brother in a talented secondary this summer.

Chris DeArmas OG (Southwest HS) -  He left the team last summer.

Ryan Gilliam DB (Junior) (Lincoln HS/ Oregon) - He sat out his transfer year and had a strong spring where he also ran track. He is now out of the track season and will be able to focus on football. Gilliam will compete this summer for a role in the defensive backfield.

Grant Gregory QB (Sophomore) (Athens HS/ Indiana) - Sat out his transfer season from Indiana and led the scout team as QB. This spring he's up to 210 lbs and made a switch to strong safety to take advantage of his athleticism. He has battled turf-toe but is making progress and will compete this summer for a back-up role in the secondary.

Matt Grothe QB (RS Freshman) (Lake Gibson HS) - He was a redshirt for the 2005 season, and used it to put on 15  pounds of muscle (205lb). He had a strong outing during spring practice, showing that he was one of the more accurate passers on the team and will compete this summer for the starting job.

Jessie Hester Jr. WR (Sophomore) (Glades Central HS) - He saw action in 9 games with one start vs. UCF on the season catching 3 passes for 37 yards, 2 rushes for -11 yards, and 1 punt return for 16 yards. He was having a good spring and catching every ball thrown his way before a dislocated shoulder caused him to miss the end of spring practice. He is recovering from his injury and will fight for position in the slot this summer.

Carlton Hill QB (Sophomore) ((Jefferson County HS) - In limited action last season Hill did not thorw the ball exceptionally well, but he did get to show what he can do on the ground. Even though he did show a habit fumbling. Hill saw action in 10 games last season, completing 11 of 24 passes for 135 yards with 2 int's, while rushing 28 times for 94 yards with one rushing touchdown coming against West Virgina. He also caught 3 passes for 19 yards. He was supposed to get the entire spring to work with the number one offense, however, due to academics he missed the majority of the spring practice and will have to wait till this summer  to show the coaching staff that he is their long-term answer behind center.

Cedric Hill TE (Sophomore) (Valdosta HS) - He played in all 12 games as a true freshmen in 2005. He lined up in different positions, catching 10 passes for 139 yards and a score. His size and speed cause match-up problems for opposing defenses. He will enter the summer as the starting tight-end,  but weighing only 215 pounds, he isn't a true tight-end, but more of a TE/WR.

Anthony (Amp) Hill WR (Sophomore) (First Coast HS/ LSU) - He transferred from LSU on scholarship, and sat out the 2005 season due to mandatory NCAA Rules, and has two years of eligibility remaining. He appears to have recovered from his knee surgery, and  was one of the top receivers during the Spring. He also caught 8 balls for 87 yards in the spring game, and will compete for a spot this summer.

Amarri Jackson WR (Junior) (Sarasota HS) - After not playing football since high school, he had an outstanding first season. He played in all 12 games of the season and was the teams second leading wide receiver, catching 22 passes for 242 yards, while rushing 7 times for 86 yards with 3 rushing touchdowns. He also threw 1 touchdown pass for 11 yards. His best game of the year was against Louisville where he scored on two reverses and threw a touchdown in USF's 45-14 win. He was mentioned during ESPN's Sports Center. Jackson had a good spring and will enter the summer as a top receiver, but must work on limiting his drops if he wants to take it to the next level.

Taurus Johnson WR (Sophomore) (Cape Coral HS) - He played in 11 games on the season as one of only five true freshmen to play in 2005, catching 3 passes for 35 yards, and carried the ball once for a 7 yard gain. This  past year he put on some muscle, and had a great spring. T.J. will enter the summer fighting for a top receiver spot, and is on the verge of having a breakout season this year.

Shane McElwain TE (RS Freshmen) (Palm Beach Central HS) - Was a redshirt for 2005. This spring he was switched to defensive end where depth was an issue, but at 235lbs he will have to fight for playing time this summer.

Jerome Murphy DB (RS Freshmen) (Elizabeth HS) - He made a switch from safety to cornerback, and was one of the most electric players this spring with five interceptions in five straight practices, he then had two more in the spring game. Standing (6'1-183lb) Murphy has great feet and quickness, he also seems to have added a  better on-field awareness to his game this spring. When asked  about Murphy after the spring game, coach Wally Burnham  said " We got to find Murphy a place. He's had a bunch of interceptions and we have to get him into the game. He's going to be rotating at corner, he's going to be in at free safety some, so we are going to use his ability even if we have to make some other moves. We have to be creative next year."

Moise Plancher RB (RS Freshmen) (Barron Collier HS) - He redshirted last season and is the only returning back besides Ricky Ponton. There was plenty of hype on Plancher going into the spring, and the coaches were very high on him saying that he's quicker than Chad Simpson was, and has serious moves in the open field.  However a hamstring injury suffered the first day of practice sidelined Plancher for the remainder of the spring, and we will have to wait until this summer to see if he is as good as advertised.

Ean Randolph WR (Senior) (Durant HS) - Had to sit out the season after transferring from Webber International, and he'll have only one year of eligibility with the Bulls, but after a strong spring practice, he was also put on scholarship and should make an impact as a sure-handed speedy receiver.

Tyller Roberts DB (RS Freshmen) (Edgewater HS) - Played in all 12 games as one of five true freshmen to play in 2005, He totaled 9 tackles, and four pass break-ups. He played mostly on special teams and some as a back-up corner, and will compete this summer for a back-up role.

Chris Robinson LB (RS Freshmen) (Flagler-Palm Coast HS) - Was a redshirt for the 2005 season, entered the spring as a back-up linebacker to Stephen Nicholas, until a broken hand sidelined him. He returned and played with a cast the remainder of the spring. Robinson has healed from his injury, but will have to come in and compete this summer with the incoming freshmen for a role as back-up linebacker.

George Selvie DE (RS Freshmen) (Pine Forest HS) - He was a redshirt for the 2005 season.  Selvie was nearly moved to offensive line, but after a very strong spring, Selvie is now a starting defensive end along with Josh Julmiste. Selvie is built in the perfect DE mold – tall, fast, strong, and relentless. He has a motor that doesn't quit.  Look for Selvie to come out hot, with Julmiste on the other side,  they could each have 10 plus sacks this season.

Danny Tolley OT (RS Freshmen) (Wesley Chapel HS) - 2005 was a redshirt for Tolley and he used the year to add some muscle. This was his first spring to prove himself, and with injuries to Thed Watson and others on the O-line he didn't disappoint. He showed that he is strong, versatile, and able to hold his own. He will continue his development this summer where he competes for multiple positions  on the line.

Theodric Watson OT (Senior) (Lakewood HS/ Northwest CC) - Watson was a JUCO transfer last year and early on proved he was the man for the job.   His best game was USF's 45-14 win against Louisville where he shut down All-American defensive end Elvis Dumervill, and held him with out a sack. He broke his hand during spring practice but should be fine and will enter the summer as the starting left tackle.
