Bulls Dominate UConn 38-16

After losing two consecutive games, USF knew they had something to prove when they took the field for their second Big East conference game of the season against UCONN on Saturday night. The (4-2, 1-1) Bulls used that intensity to establish their dominance early on by scoring 14 points on only five plays in front of a home crowd of 30,010.

The Huskies opening drive ended quickly after linebacker Chris Robinson broke up a key pass on third and seven. Then Jerome Murphy blocked the Huskies' punt, which Sam Miller quickly jumped on to give the Bulls the ball at the 16 yard line.

On the ensuing play, Matt Grothe ran the option which he broke a for a 16 yard touchdown to give the Bulls a 7-0 lead. The Bulls defense then did their part and forced (2-3, 0-1) Connecticut to go three and out.

USF would only need four plays to find the end zone for the second time of the day. First, Grothe made a perfect play action fake before completing a 31 yard bomb to S.J. Green. Benjamin Williams followed suit and scored his second career touchdown on a 13 yard rush. For the game, Williams rushed for 108 yards on 22 carries and the score.

Bulls' fans received a little bit of a scare early on in the second quarter when quarterback Matt Grothe was injured while running the ball. After Pat Julmiste took over behind center, the drive stalled thanks in part to a 10 yard penalty. Grothe would return to action the next time the Bulls received the ball. By the end of the game, Grothe had accumulated 82 yards on 15 carries with 3 rushing scores.

The Huskies responded by driving 75 yards in only eight plays. The drive concluded with a 10 yard touchdown pass from Mike Bonislawski to Deon Anderson. Bonislawski was the leading passer of the game

Problems arose during the conversion attempt though and Matt Nuzie, who failed to make a 24 yard field goal in the first quarter, missed the extra point to keep the score 14-6. Greg Vicidomino relieved Nuzie of his kicking duties from that point on and was successful on his first field goal, a 19 yard chip shot to cut the Bulls' lead to 14-9 entering halftime.

Connecticut's star running back, Terry Caulley was held completely in check by a stingy Bulls' defense all day long. Entering the game as the nation's third leading rusher with 2,928 yards and an average of 97.6 yards per game, Caulley was limited to only 38 yards.

The second half opened just like first with the Bulls in complete control. Two plays into the drive, Grothe found S.J. Green down the middle for a 31 yard gain. Then on third and goal from the eight yard line, Grothe scored on an eight yard rush after pump faking a defender nearly out of his shoes, to give the Bulls' a 21-9 advantage.

That score marked the second straight game in which Grothe scored at least two rushing touchdowns. Grothe was not finished for the day though. On the Bulls' next possession, Grothe drove the team 93 yards in 10 plays and scored his third rushing touchdown of the day on a six yard run. With that touchdown, Grothe became only the second quarterback in the team's history to rush for three touchdowns. The first one to accomplish this was Marquel Blackwell.

After forcing Connecticut to go three and out yet again, the Bulls nailed the coffin shut with a 12 play, 70 yard drive that took six minutes off the game clock. This drive concluded with Grothe hitting Amarri Jackson for a five yard touchdown to give USF a 35-9 advantage. The Huskies did score late on a one yard run with 1:14 left.
