Basketball Game Observations: FIU

USF dominated most of Tuesday's game to win 79-50 over FIU, that wins moves them to 3-0 on the season. Read more game notes and observations from the USFNation staff.

Both teams opened the game with an upbeat tempo while neither team had a significant size advantage. Once the game progressed, the speed advantage turned to the Bulls while their opponents began to look confused and wasting away shots. The Bulls were clearly the more talented team in all aspects of the game including speed, hustle, and shooting. Their largest lead of the night was by 33 points with 1:25 left in the second half. FIU had no free throws attempts in the first half, went 0-3 on the three point line, and 3-12 on field goals. In the first half, USF out rebounded FIU 7 to 3, all of the USF rebounds came for the defensive boards. McHugh Mattis had another huge game with 22 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks and went 4-4 from the free throw line. Mattis also didn't miss a shot until fourteen minutes in the second half. Freshman Solomon Bozeman was also 7-7 on the free throw line in the game.

First Half:
· Adamu Saaka started instead of projected starter Solomon Bozeman.
· McHugh Mattis blocks an early Panthers shot, and the Bulls respond with a long range jumper by Melvin Buckley. 
· The Bulls show an incredible focus, really working together, and all playing in a zone mentality
· McHugh Mattis was driving hard and penetrating the paint to make a powerful yet agile lay-up through the Panther defense.
· Chris Capko with a beautiful three pointer
· Solomon Bozeman first USF sub with 14 minutes left in the 1st
· McHugh Mattis drives to spins off the defender to make an agile lay-up and repeats again during the next possession
· Melvin Buckley misses a close jumper, but McHugh Mattis tips in the ball for two
· Swing play for Chris Capko to hit the bench side corner three pointer
· FIU's play seemed flat and uninspired
· McHugh Mattis drives into the basket for a monster dunk, and then the next possession keeps pressure and penetration in the paint to draw to foul and hit both free throws. He also grabs the next defensive rebound.
· Melvin Buckley hits huge three-pointer.
· Chris Capko takes a risky pass through traffic which was almost turned over but somehow reached McHugh Mattis for spin around lay up over the defender which set the mood into halftime the score 43-27 with USF dominating the game

Second Half:
· Both teams come out of halftime a little flat
· With 18 minutes left, USF scored the first points of the second half
· Adamu Saaka misses lay up and Aris Williams tips it in the ball to get crowd back on its feet
· McHugh Mattis has first miss of the game with 14 minutes left in the second half
· Solomon Bozeman steals the ball in mid-court to drive in the lane to cause the foul.
· McHugh Mattis with a huge block that brings out a huge roar from the small attendance 
· McHugh Mattis absolutely dominating the boards
· Solomon Bozeman deflected a pass that Adamu Saaka recovered the loose ball to start a give and go to Solomon and Adamu scoring (Perfect execution of the give and go) 
· McHugh Mattis steals the ball in mid court and drives it down for a one-handed dunk
· With a 1:40 left, another swing play to Chris Capko for another bench-side corner three pointer
