USFNation Q&A: Bulls Committ Kyle Dampier

We reported earlier that the Bulls got their 13th commitment from Merritt Island DT Kyle Dampier. In this exclusive interview find out why he chose USF, what type of a player he is, and much more. Read on to find out what he had to say. Only on! Get it First, Get it Fast

DT Kyle Dampier 6-foot 3, 255 pounds. How did you do this season?
Kyle Dampier: We did pretty good, we were district champs and lost in the second round of the playoffs to Neese.  I had 8 sacks, I'm not sure exactly how many tackles, I'd say about 8 or 9 a game, somewhere around 90-94 tackles.

USFN: How did you as a junior?
Dampier: As a junior I think I had 94 tackles and 3 sacks and was named to the Brevard All-County Football Team (first team defense)

USFN: Why did you choose USF?
Dampier: I chose USF because of the location, I wanted to stay in Florida, and it seamed like the right place to be.

USFN: What are some of the things you like about USF?
Dampier:  The location, the coaching staff, and the facilities.

USFN: How long have the Bulls been recruiting you, and who were involved?
Dampier:  They've been recruiting me since I was a junior. I spoke with Coach Douglas and Coach Frye the most, but I called coach Leavitt and gave him my commitment.

USFN: Have you been following the Bulls this season?
Dampier:  Yeah, I follow them; they did real good this year.

USFN: How about that West Virginia game?
Dampier:  That was great, one of my buddy's Danny Verpaele the free safety; he had that great tackle on the one-yard line.

USFN: Do you know any of the current players on the Bulls?
Dampier:  I'm good friends with Danny, I met a couple of the other players but don't know them personally.

USFN: What style of a Player are you?
Dampier:  I've got a good motor, and don't like to give up on plays.

USFN: What position do you play?
Dampier:  Defensive tackle, but some games I've played both ways.

USFN: What position are the Bulls recruiting you for?
Dampier: Mostly for the defensive line, but if that doesn't work out then offensive line.

USFN: What type of a defense do you like to play in the most?
Dampier: Probably the 4-3, that's what we ran this year, but last year we ran the 3-4, but it really doesn't matter what defense I play. I don't really pay attention to the guys behind me; I pay more attention to the guys in front of me.

USFN: What are some of your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
Dampier:   My strengths are; I stay low off of the ball, my Pursuit to the ball, and I also have good speed off the ball. My weaknesses?  I just want to work on my strength, my awareness, and make more tackles.

USFN: What are your height, weight and 40 time?
Dampier: I'm 6'3 255 pounds, and I run a 4.9

USFN: Is there a player on another level, college or pro that you model your game after?
Dampier:  Not really, I try to play like as I'm coached, or how my coach tells me to play.

USFN: How are your grades?
Dampier:  They're good I got a 2.4 GPA. I took the placement tests but I don't like to put those out publicly, but I shouldn't have a problem qualifying, I just got to work on one class and I'm good.

USFN: Did your family want you to stay close to home?
Dampier:  No it was my decision, I wanted to stay in Florida just in case my dad wanted to come see a game, or anybody in my family.

USFN: Did playing time factor into your decision?
Dampier:   It doesn't matter if I play my first year when I get there. I'd like to play, but if I have to redshirt I will.

USFN: Have you been to USF?
Dampier:  Yeah I went on an unofficial visit.

USFN: What other schools were showing you interest prior to committing to USF?
Dampier:  Louisville, UCF, and Miami were showing the most interest.

USFN: Did you have offers from all those schools?
Dampier:  I know I had an offer from Miami and Central Florida, I'm not sure about Louisville."

USFN: Are you going to make an official visit to USF?
Dampier: Yeah, I think my official visit is on January 26th.

USFN: What are you going to do to stay in shape until you get to campus?
Dampier: Work out hard and stick with the same program that my coach has me on.

USFN: How committed are you to USF?
Dampier: I am 100 percent committed!
