USF Basketball Game Observations: Notre Dame

The USF men's basketball team upset the No. 21-ranked Notre Dame 69-63 Saturday night at the USF Sun Dome. Forward McHugh Mattis matched his career-high in scoring with 23 points, and had a career high 16 rebounds in the win over the Fighting Irish. Game Observations:

1st Half:  

  • Attendance is much higher than average, due partly to all the Notre Dame fans.
  • Kentrell Gransberry started things off driving to the basket, getting the two points while getting fouled and making the free throw.
  • McHugh Mattis gets fouled under the basket and makes both free throws.
  • McHugh Mattis saves the ball from going out of bounds for an Irish turnover, but the Bulls then miss the lay-up on the other end of the court and Irish get the rebound.
  • Solomon Bozeman subs in and makes a mid-range jumper.
  •  Adamu "Amu" Saaka makes a short jumper after Chris Capko almost turns over the ball.
  • At 9 minutes in, the Bulls are getting into rhythm, but the Irish are still holding strong.
  • Melvin Buckley with an incredible acrobatic lay-up.
  • McHugh Mattis misses a dunk resulting a  turnover.
  • Melvin Buckley misses a three pointer but McHugh Mattis grabs the rebound for two points under the basket.
  • Melvyn Richardson with an incredible will fights for the rebound several times, then dishing the ball outside  to Chris Howard who makes the three to give the Bulls an 8 point lead.
  • At 1:40, Solomon Bozeman hits a three as the game clock is expiring.
  • From the 5-minute mark to the half, the lead for the Bulls changes from 5 to 3 points.
  • The Bulls largest lead is by 7 at 1:40, and the Irish largest lead is  by 2 at 17:45.
  • The Bulls had 7 points from the bench while the Irish had 0 points.
  • End of the Half- Bulls 31- Irish 26.

  2nd Half: 

  • Melvin Buckley hits a three pointer to start off the half

  • McHugh Mattis slams the ball with a monster dunk.

  • Adamu  Saaka has great block as one of the Irish players went for a lay-up.

  • At 14:00 mark, the Irish pull within 5 points, and at 11:30 mark, Irish pull within 3 points, and at 10:30 mark Irish pull within 1 point, and at 9:30 mark, the Irish hitting another three pointer to lead the game 44-46.

  • USF hits to free throws to tie the game at the 9 minute mark, 46-46.

  • At 7:45, McHugh Mattis hits a three pointer to give the Bulls the

  • McHugh Mattis drives to the basket for two score, 50-49 Bulls.

  • McHugh draws the foul, makes one out of two free throws score, 51-49 Bulls.

  •  At 5:10, the Irish hit a long jumper to tie the 51-51.

  • McHugh Mattis drives for two and draws the foul but misses the free throw, 53-51 Bulls.

  • With 4:00 left, Melvin Buckley hits long jumper, but the Irish respond with two to keep Bulls lead by two.

  • With 3:30 left, McHugh Mattis recovers the loose ball, and  makes the short jumper and gives the Bulls a four point lead.

  • With 2:30 left, McHugh Mattis tips the ball in after a miss shot as the game clock was expiring, 59-53 Bulls.

  •  With 1:12 left, Solomon Bozeman hits 2 for 2 free throws, 63- 55 Bulls.

  • The Irish start getting desperate and start fouling the Bulls.

  • The Bulls shot 65.2% free throws, while the Irish shot only 25% from the line.

  • The win was  USF's fourth in 25 conference games since entering the Big East last season.

  • Mattis matched his career-high in scoring (23), and in rebounds (16)

  • The Irish were 9-for-28 on 3-point attempts

  • The Bulls had 32 Points from the paint, while the Irish had 20

  • The Bulls had 22 second chance points, while the Irish had 10

  • The Bulls got 15 points from their bench, while the Irish only had 3
