After several tumultuous seasons on the hardwood, USF took a step in the right direction to restore respect and pride back into their basketball program. The hiring of former Arkansas Razorback head coach Stan Heath ushers in a sense of excitement amongst the local media and fans alike regarding the future. However, the ones who may be the most excited, and affected are the players. In part 1 of this feature USFNation caught up with Guard Chris Howard and got his impressions.
You've been through a lot with this program what are your impressions of the coaching change?
"I feel pretty positive. He comes from a winning program and a winning background, our leader is basically a winner now."
Has it been hard not having a coach these last few weeks?
"Yeah, it's been extremely hard. Not being able to work out like you normally would during this period. But now we have Coach Heath and we plan to get started as soon as possible."
How was your first meeting with him?
"It was great, a little strange not seeing Coach Mac there. But its something we will adapt to and we look forward to adapting."
Do you feel Coach Heath's style will suit your style of play?
"Yeah I think I can play both the half-court set and push the ball, I believe we will use both. Being the point guard of this team I have to be able to adapt to both."
Over the last year the fan base was not that strong, do you think this move will help improve that?
"Yes. Coach Heath has already made it aware to us, telling us that we're going to get out and talk to the students and fans to get them to as many games as possible and hopefully they will be supportive. I know that's one thing he's planning on doing."
How do you feel about the new coach calling a 7am practice (today)?
"I mean that's basketball and part of getting better. I'm behind him 100%, if he wants us to get up at 4:30 then I would do it. He's got the numbers to prove he's credible, so I'll do whatever he wants us to."
