Lawrence McCoy

USFNation.com What have you been doing to prepare yourself for when you get to USF?
Lawrence McCoy:  I've been working hard, running track, lifting weights, staying in shape, and concentrating on school, that's basically it.

USFN:
Why did you choose USF?
McCoy: I felt very comfortable there. When I was on my visit, I really liked everything about it, the coaches the players, the facility, everything. Being on the field at Raymond James, the same field that the Buccaneer's play on was really something also.

USFN:
Have you been following the Bulls this season?
McCoy: Yes sir, I followed them and visited the campus three times also. I went down there most recently for their spring game, which was awesome.

USFN: What position are the Bulls recruiting you for, and do you play any other positions?
McCoy: The Bulls are recruiting me for offensive tackle. I play offensive tackle and defensive end. I played mostly offense this year because I had a bad eye injury. I wasn't supposed to play the rest of the season, but I played anyway and it got worse, that's why I missed as many days of school as I did, but I'm hard headed and didn't want to give up my senior year like that. Now I'll have to where goggles when I play football. That or a shield but I don't like using a shield because it fogs up.

USFN:
How long have the Bulls been recruiting you, and who were involved?
McCoy: They were on me for a while, in the beginning it was Coach Frey, I really liked him. Then Coach Simmonds came in and took over and I liked him too. Also Coach Leavitt, he's something else.

USFN:
Do you know any of the current players on the Bulls?
McCoy: Yes sir, Carlton (Hill) and Ced (Hill), they came from my school.

USFN: What type of a offense do you like to run the most?
McCoy: Well we ran an open book offense, we ran pretty much everything, Winged-T, I-formation, Spread, Shotgun, but to me It doesn't really matter, I like them all.

USFN: Do prefer run blocking or pass blocking?
McCoy: It doesn't really matter, but if I had to say then run blocking.

USFN:
What type of defense do you like to see when you get to the line?
McCoy: Really the defense doesn't matter, but I like to see a quick end out there, one that thinks he can try and do some things. I don't like to go against a lazy end. I like it when an end tries to do all kinds of things out there like spin moves on me and stuff. I makes me a better player.

USFN:
What is your favorite play to run?
McCoy: I like to pull. I like to be a pull tackle. We used to run a play, it was more of a trap, but I like that.

USFN:
What is your favorite move?
McCoy:  If he's faster then me and he's rushing off of the end, I like to do a move called block, chop, and roll, and get him worried about me instead of the QB or back.

USFN: What side of the line do you play?
McCoy: I play left side tackle, but can play both sides if needed.

USFN: What are some of your assets as a player?
McCoy:  I'd say my size and my speed. My best thing is when I get my hands in between the numbers and the shoulder pads.

USFN: Is there anything you want to work on?
McCoy:  I want to work on resetting my hands, and getting stronger.

USFN: Is there a player on another level, college or pro that you model your game after?
McCoy:  No sir, not really. I just want to try and be the best that I can be. I want to reach my potential, that's what matters to me.

USFN: What is your current height and weight?
McCoy:  Right now I'm 6'6.5, and my weight is 295 pounds.

USFN:
What did you play at during the season?
McCoy:  I started around 250 and finished around 265 lbs.

USFN:
How have you been doing in the weight room?
McCoy:  I'm not as strong on bench, around 325 pounds. On my squat, I put up 575 lbs, and on power clean I ‘m at 300. That's pretty much what we do.

USFN:
What do you run the 40 in?
McCoy:  Right now I'm probably at a five flat, but I'm trying to improve on that.

USFN:
Do you play any other sports?
McCoy:  Yes sir I wrestle also. I love to wrestle, it helps me stay in shape and use my hands.

USFN:
What are you going to do to stay in shape before you get to Campus?
McCoy:  Just keep working out. I'm actually at work right now, but I'm about to go some push-ups and sit-ups. Yes sir, every chance I get, I do something

USFN:
Do they have any problems redshirting?
McCoy:  I don't know what they are planning, but I feel like they want me to redshirt. I'll do what they think is best.

USFN:
Do you enjoy playing special teams?
McCoy:  Yes sir, I've played on field goal, but I always wanted to play on punt return.

USFN: What do they plan to accomplish while here at USF?
McCoy:  I really want to get a degree. Every ball players dream is to make it pro, but I want to get my degree, and graduate, you know something to fall back on. I want to be a dentist but my mom says my hands are too big to put in someone's mouth.

USFN: What three things come to your head when I say USF?
McCoy:  Awesome program, great facilities and the best coaches around.

USFN: What team are they most looking forward to playing against in the next 4 years?
McCoy:  I really hope to play Florida.

USFN:
How are your grades, how are you toward qualifying.
McCoy: My grades are real good, I have a 3.5 GPA, but I'm one of those people that don't do as well on tests. There's something about sitting in that room for 3 hours that I have trouble with. Coach Simmonds told me about the sliding scale and my guidance counselor told me that I'll be ok, but the coaches want me to keep retaking the test. They want me to get like a 17, but golly the ACT only goes up to 21, and it cost me $85.00 every time I take it.

USFN:
When do you plan on getting to campus?
McCoy: I want to get there in June, but they say I can't come until I pass the test. So I just prey that I make it, if not then I'll have to wait until the fall.

USFN:
Are you excited to get to campus?
McCoy: Yes Sir, I can't wait, it can't get here soon enough.
