Class of 2006: Revisited Part 1

Sabbath Joseph LB (Miami Central HS) Sabbath was a redshirt for the 2006 season, but broke his leg during practice mid way through the season. This past spring he showed no effects from the injury and looked very fluid. He ran mostly with the second team during the spring, and even though it may be tough to crack the starting lineup, but Joseph was in the two-deep rotation this spring and should compete this summer.

Andrew Ketchel TE (Choctawatchee HS) Ketchel redshirted for the 2006 season, but spent the time in the weight room to prepare himself for the upcoming year. This past spring Andrew was up to 232 pounds and was having a great spring until his leg was rolled up on during inside drills. The good news was that Ketchel knee injury was only a sprain and he just missed the tail end of the spring session. During summer conditioning Ketchel wasn't wearing a brace and looked like he has recovered and looked back to speed.

Alwan Lee QB (Booker T. Washington HS) Lee failed to qualify academically and was last attending Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, He had a knee injury last summer, redshirted, and wasn't on the 2006 roster. At last look he wasn't enrolled at the school.

Craig Marshall DE (Choctawatchee HS) Marshall failed to qualify academically and is currently attending Pearl River community college in Mississippi. Marhall redshirted last fall, but will play this season and has indicated that he is hoping to return to USF in 2008.

Kevin McCaskill C (Amos P. Godby HS) McCaskill failed to qualify for the '06 class, but stayed in Tampa, got a qualifying score and joined the Bulls as part of the '07 class.

Alonzo McQueen LB (Robert E. Lee HS) Alonzo redshirted for the 2006 season. He spent the year working out and came in this spring with 10 pounds of extra muscle. McQueen was having a strong spring working mostly with the second team, and was looking good. He did suffer a dislocated shoulder, but said it was an injury that he was had for a while and simply works through it. He said this summer that he spent a good amount of time stretching and strengthening his shoulder to limit future problems.

Carlton Mitchell WR (Gaither HS) Spent the 2006 season as a redshirt. This past spring Carlton participated in track and broke the USF 400 meter record. He missed a good amount of practice to do so, but when he was there looked great. During summer conditioning Carlton has looked like a physical specimen, and his extra work with Grant Gregory is paying off. His catching and route running looks vastly improved and big things are expected out of him this year.

Aston Samuels RB (Glades Central) Aston redshirted for the 2006 season. Aston turned heads this spring with his speed and agility. His teammates say he moves like a cat, and when he catches a ball in the open field look out. Aston is going into the summer with a slight edge in the starting rotation.

Jason Sherman WR (First Coast HS) Sherman was a redshirt for the 2006 season. Sherman has size, decent hands, and likes to block.  New receiver coach Canales is helping Sherman hone all his receiver skills, especially his blocking skills. The WR Unit is stacked, but Sherman is in the mix.

Josh Smiley DT (Milton HS) Smiley was one of only a few freshmen to see any game time in 2006 seeing action in 3 games making one tackle. He injured his leg during practice and took a redshirt for the year. Smiley put on 10 pounds of muscle and showed no effects from the injury this spring and is in the two-deep rotation and will compete this summer.

Robert Spann LB (ST. Petersburg HS) Spann failed to qualify academically for the 2006 class. Span attended several USF practices last spring, but wasn't able to join the '07 class either. Greg Auman reported that ‘Spann went to Merced College in California and played last fall, then transferred this spring to Mississippi Gulf Coast College, but will attend Fresno City College in San Francisco this fall and redshirt this season, hoping to come back to USF in 2009.'

Leslie Stirrups DT (Hillsborough HS) Stirrups was the highest touted recruit of the 2006 class but failed to qualify academically. After several mishaps, he eventually went to Pearl River CC, and is planning to come back to USF once he finishes at Pearl.

Jeremiah Warren DT/OL (Bay Senior HS) Warren failed to qualify for the '06 class, but stayed in Tampa, got a qualifying score and joined the Bulls as part of the '07 class. Jeremiah is a big kid now weighing around 330 pounds. Once he gets everything down, he could be something special.

Jerrel Young S (Gibbs HS) Young failed to qualify academically, but he has spent the last year trying to get a qualifying test score. He still hasn't gotten the required score and has said that he is looking at the Pearl river JUCO route.
