David Bedford, 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, gets a lot of comparisons to the nations current sack leader George Selvie. People tell him that he's plays just like #95, he's a speed rusher who also makes plays in the running game, but after talking to Bedford for a few minutes I would also compare him to Selvie off the field.
"I had a pretty good year" A modest Bedford added, "13 sacks, 60+ tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries and 16 tackle-for-loss in eight games."
Those are not ‘pretty good' numbers, those are exceptional numbers, good enough to set a new sack record at Independence CC where Bedford has been playing since he enrolled in 2006.
After graduating from Palm Beach High School, he committed and signed with the Louisville Cardinals, never playing a down for them due to low test scores. Now the fierce pass-rusher has a whole new outlook on recruiting.
"I'm ready for my opportunity. I want to go to a school that will put me on the field right away. It doesn't even have to be as a starter my first year. I don't mind being on the second team because I only need a couple plays to prove I deserve to be on the field. I just want to have the opportunity to prove myself."
Right now there are about 5 schools in the running for Bedford's services, they are West Virginia, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Arkansas and his leader – South Florida.
"They tell me they are going to have an opening next year at defensive end, and with George Selvie only being a sophomore next year, it would give me two years to play along side him. He's very similar to me and we would be a tough combination to stop coming off the ends."
David is very excited about the idea of playing for the Bulls, but will take a few more visits before making anything final. On November 17th he'll be at Kansas State, on the 30th he'll visit Ole Miss, a week later he travels to West Virginia and he's already taken one visit to Iowa State. That leaves one more visit, likely to Tampa.
"I think Coach McCarney from USF will call me tonight and we'll figure something out. We've been talking about it for a while and I know I'm going to visit, we just haven't set an exact date."
When the visit date is scheduled USFNation will have a full update and let you know!
With already one JUCO commit, Anthony Jones, it shows that USF is looking to carry momentum over to next year. A JUCO WR and DE are players at impact positions. No more re-building, USF is looking to re-load this year and David Bedford would be a key signing for the Bulls in '08. With more to come, USF is also in the lead for Pearl River LB Kion Wilson and El Camino big-man Cedrick Mack.
