USF Recruiting Must "Finish Strong"

With the season winding down, recruiting season really starts to heat-up. We have assembled a list of 3 key positions that will be addressed in the '08 class. Find out who the hot prospects are, only on!

On Saturday, at about 3:30pm the Bulls regular season will come to an end and the South Florida coaching staff will shift 100% of their focus to recruiting.  By Sunday afternoon nearly half of the coaching staff will be on the road in route to their respective recruiting regions and the battle to land the top prospects will continue.

This year USF has more early verbal commitments than any other season in their history.  With 18 early commits it allows the staff to zero-in on a smaller, more precise group of prospects, mainly at "need" positions.  Every year there are different needs and USFNation has identified 3 key positions to watch for the '08 class.

Left Tackle- Every offense is only as successful as its offensive line, and more importantly the left tackle on that offensive line.  This is the guy that will protect Matt Grothe's blind-side and give him the confidence to hang in the pocket an extra second and make a big play.  USF loses Walter Walker to graduation and will have Marc Dile returning for his senior season, but injuries have haunted Dile his entire career as a Bull.  Because of this the coaching staff has taken an un-conventional route to fill this need, they are recruiting several JUCO linemen.

How to fill this need:

 Most Likely-

OT/OG Josh Garvin 6-4, 276 (Lake Gibson HS); Offers- USF Commit

OT/OG Danous Estenar 6-4, 340 (Palm Beach Central HS); Offers- USF

OT Ricky Barnum 6-3, 260 (Lake Gibson HS); Offers- UF, WVU, UGA, USF, Georgia Tech.

Wish List-

OT Cedric Mack 6-2.5, 340 (El Camino JUCO); Offers- Iowa State, USF, Arizona, Oregon State, Kentucky

OT Benjamin Jones 6-6, 280 (Miami Northwestern HS); Offers- Auburn, LSU, USF, UM, Clemson

Long Shots-

OT Greg Shaw 6-6, 280 (Miami Pace HS); Offers- LSU, USF, Auburn, GT, Wisconsin, UGA

OT Andrew Mitchell 6-5, 300 (Snow JUCO); Offers- USF, Arizona, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, NC State

OG/OT Mike Diaz 6-5 325 (Cerritos JUCO); Offers- Arizona Commit

Wide Receiver-  In the spread offense that the Bulls run, there is no such thing as too much depth.  Coming into the year everyone was confident in the depth at WR, two injuries later the Bulls were counting on true freshman Dontavia Bogan as the go-to-guy.  Because Matt Grothe throws the ball to any and all receivers on the field it puts a greater importance on this position.  Another facet to wide receiver recruiting this year is kick/punt returning.  Ever since losing Ean Randolph the Bulls have not had a legitimate homerun threat returning kicks.  With the loss of Amarri Jackson (graduation) the goal for this year's class is to get taller and faster.

How to fill this need:

Most Likely-

Daniel Bryant 6-1, 182 (Chiles HS); Offers- USF Commit

Anthony Jones 6-2, 180 (North East Mississippi JUCO); Offers- USF Commit

Roger Frazier 6-2, 182 (Pearl River JUCO)

Jordan McNair 6-2, 185 (Port St. Lucie HS); Offers- Alabama, UCF, USF

Wish List-
Tommy Streeter 6-5, 200 (Miami Northwestern HS); Offers- USF, BC,
             South Carolina, Oregon, UM
Derek Winter 6-1, 190 (Plant HS); Offers- USF, Airforce

Long Shots-

Davon Johnson 5-11, 165 (Booker T. HS); Offers- UM Commit

Martavious Odoms 5-8, 171 (Pahokee HS); Offers- Auburn, Notre Dame,USF, South Carolina

Defensive Line- Losing Jarriett Buie, Richard Clebert and Woody George will be a major blow to a line that is already thin on talent.  Although George Selvie is having a year like no other lineman in team history, the defensive line as a whole has been up and down all year, mostly due to injuries.  Another reason that USF needs to load up on talent is because of the way they substitute.  First teamers and second teamers see nearly the same amount of snaps per game, especially at home where the heat becomes a factor and substitutions are more frequent.

Most Likely-

DT Cory Grissom 6-2, 275 (Troup HS); Offers- USF Commit

DE Craig Marshall 6-5, 260 (Pearl River JUCO); Offers- USF Commit

DE Anthony Mains 6-6, 220 (Golden Gate HS); Offers- USF Commit

DE James Jones 6-2, 225 (Lake Gibson HS); Offers- USF Commit

DT Nick Craig 6-2, 300 (Carrolton HS) Offers- Eastern Kentucky

Wish List-

DE David Bedford 6-5, 245 (Independence JUCO); Offers- Kansas, WVU, USF, Iowa State

DT/DE Sean Ferguson 6-4, 225 (Miami Norland HS); Offers- FIU, Rutgers, USF

Long Shots-

DE Corey Liuget 6-3, 270 (Hialeah HS); Offers- FSU, UM, USF, Illinois, GT, LSU, WVU

DE Markus White 6-4, 248 (Butler JUCO); Offers- UM, UNC, Oklahoma, GT, FSU, WVU
