USF (3-3) won its third consecutive game after an 0-3 start.
Sam Hinnant led East Carolina (2-3) with 25 points, and Gabe Blair finished with 14 for the Pirates.
South Florida built a 14-point lead midway through the first half, but East Carolina rallied behind the long-range shooting of Hinnant. The junior guard connected from behind the arc for the sixth time in the closing moments of the half to put the Pirates ahead 34-33.
But Verdejo answered with a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute to give South Florida a 39-36 halftime advantage.
The Bulls slowly rebuilt their lead in the second half.

? Junior guard Jesus Verdejo had a team-high 20 points, tying his career high set 12/17/06 vs. Norfolk State. He also made a career high four 3-pointers in on a career-high seven attempts.
? True Freshman Orane Chin tallied a career-high 17 points, besting his previous high of 13 set 11/16/07 vs. Rhode Island. He also pulled down seven rebounds.
? Senior center Kentrell Gransberry tallied his third double-double of the season, notching 15 points and 10 rebounds. It was the 15th double-double of his career. He also has double figure rebounds in four of five games played.
? Sophomore guard Chris Howard was one assist shy of his second double-double of the season. He scored 12 points and had nine assists with just one turnover.
? True freshman Dominique Jones put together a good all-around game, tallying 11 points with eight rebounds and six assists.
