The recruitment of DB prospects has become much like a roller-coaster ride for Bulls fans. First there are a bunch of prospects then it looks like there may only be one or two the Bulls are considering and now a new break in the story. It seems as if Patrick Nixon, who was once written off as a legit target is back on the board.
Mainly because of a rumored commitment to Illinois, Nixon was off the USF recruiting radar. However, Patrick tells USFNation that there never was a commitment and now the 5'11 CB will be visiting Tampa in mid January.
"I went up to Illinois in October." Said Nixon, "It was a good visit, but I never committed."
This season Nixon had over 80 tackles, 2 INT's and one return for a touchdown.
"I had a good year, nobody ever through at me though. When I played corner only 2 balls were thrown in my direction. All my picks came when I played safety, it was the only way I could get to the ball."
With the season over Nixon now turns his focus to recruiting where he has one visit set and another one in the works.
"Besides my USF visit, I'm working on setting one up with Indiana."
"I've been getting a lot of attention from USF, also coaches from UM and FIU have come to see me."
Nixon says his relationship with the Bulls goes back to his junior year.
"I've known coach Douglas for a while now, he's a cool guy. He started talking with me about a year ago. I'm looking forward to getting down to Tampa and meeting with the rest of the coaches."
There is one other person besides Patrick who will play an important roll in his decision.
"I just want to play ball, but my Mom wants me to stay close to home. She goes on all my visits with me."
During the offseason Patrick plays basketball and flag football to stay in shape. He has a 3.0 GPA and expects to be fully qualified. We'll talk with Patrick in a couple weeks before his visit to South Florida.
The news about Patrick Nixon should be a pleasant surprise to Bulls fans. Back in October he was all but written-off. Now he is right there on the top of the board and in the mix. I expect Patrick to be apart of the Bulls '08 class. He told me that he won't make a decision on any school until he visits USF, and if the feeling is right he could commit on his visit to Tampa. As always we'll stay on this one.
