Leavitt visits Northwestern LB, Spence

Linebacker Sean Spence, a Miami commit, has plans to graduate high school early and enroll in college this January. The heat is turning up on this 4-star LB from Miami. Find out his thoughts on hosting Bulls head coach Jim Leavitt last week. Only on USFNation.com!

One of the top linebackers in Florida, Sean Spence is in the process of helping his team win their second straight State Championship. Last week Northwestern beat Deerfield Beach to move into the finals at the Citrus Bowl this coming weekend. In that game Spence dominated once again with a 15 tackle performance.

"We're focused on next week." Said Spence, "We will watch some film and practice hard this week. We have a chance to be great."

Besides states, Spence is also focused on recruiting. He recently had a visit from South Florida head coach Jim Leavitt.

"Coach Leavitt and coach Scott came to my house last week."

"Leavitt is a great guy, he's honest and I like him as a head coach. He met my mom and dad for the first time and talked about my chance to come in and compete at USF."

"My mom and dad liked him. My dad has always liked the way he coaches, but this was the first time he ever met him in person."

Spence, who is a Miami commit, told USFNation that since he plans to enroll early he's going to have to make a decision in the next 3 weeks.

"I've got it narrowed down to a few schools, they are Tennessee, UNC, USF and UM."

However there could be a late player in the competition for Spence.

"UF is going to offer me in the next few days. If they do I might take a visit there. My mom is a Florida grad and she knows a lot about them."

Spence says if the Gators do offer he'll take a visit, look at their depth chart and add them to the list of schools he'll choose from when he's ready to decide.

What is the 6-1, 200 pound linebacker looking for when he chooses a school?

"Wherever I go I want to be able to call that place home. Education is very important, but also my safety. My parents want to know I'm safe at all times, they've been stressing that to me. I want to be surrounded by positive influences."

For now Spence says he is done taking visits, unless a UF offer arrives, then he will take one final visit before making his decision.

"Right now I'm worried about this state championship. It's all I can think about."

My Take:
Coach Leavitt can only visit a recruit in-home one time. This is a big move for the South Florida staff, since Spence is enrolling early the visit by Leavitt was forced to move up. Normally he waits till January to "meet the parents". From all accounts the visit went very well and as always coach Leavitt made an impression the Spence family. With the Gators looming, the competition for Sean could take another crazy turn. Stay tuned…
