Dominique Jones: Big East Rookie of the Week

On Monday, Bulls freshman guard Dominique Jones earned BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Week, and center Kentrell Gransberry was named to the weekly Honor Roll for their performances last week.

On Monday, the BIG EAST Conference has named USF guard Dominique Jones Rookie of the Week, and center Kentrell Gransberry to the weekly Honor Roll for their performances in the week-ending Feb. 17. Connecticut guard A.J. Price was chosen as BIG EAST Player of the Week.

Jones was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for the third time after he averaged 22.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks in two games. He scored 29 points in an 89-78 win against Syracuse, including 10 consecutive free throws in the last 1:24 to clinch the win. He added 16 points in an overtime loss to Connecticut, including a go-ahead basket with six seconds left in the extra period.

The Bulls standout freshman was also named the BE rookie of the Week on Dec 3rd after averaging 22 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals in two victories. The Lake Wales, native scored a career-high 30 points in a 75-67 win against Central Florida, going 10-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and scored 14 points in a 77-69 win at Florida International.

The week after Jones was named The Sporting News National Player of the Week as well as the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week on  Dec. 10. Jones averaged 27.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals in wins over Richmond and UAB, shooting 61.5 percent from the floor, 40 percent from 3-point range and 86.4 percent from the foul line in the two games. Jones had 30 points and 14 boards in the victory at Richmond and 25 points and six rebounds against the Blazers.

Price was chosen as BIG EAST Player of the Week after he averaged 24.5 points and 8.0 assists in two wins as the Huskies extended their winning streak to nine games. He scored a career-high 26 points with nine assists in an 84-78 win against Notre Dame. He added 23 points with seven assists in a 74-73 overtime win at USF. Price has averaged 20.0 points in seven games against ranked opponents this season.

USF senior center Kentrell Gransberry was named to the weekly Honor roll after averaging 24.5 points and 12.0 rebounds in two games last week. Gransberry had 26 points, 15 rebounds, six blocks and three assists in an OT loss to Connecticut, and also had 23 points and nine rebounds in a win against Syracuse.

BIG EAST Honor Roll

John Williamson, Cincinnati, F, Sr.
Scored a game-high 25 points with 11 rebounds in a 60-43 win at St. John's. Made 11-of-18 shots from the field.

Tory Jackson, Notre Dame, G, So.
Averaged 15.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 2.0 steals in two games. Had 17 points and 10 assists in the win at Rutgers.

Kentrell Gransberry, USF, C, Sr.
Averaged 24.5 points and 12.0 rebounds in two games. Had 26 points, 15 rebounds, six blocks and three assists in an OT loss to Connecticut. Had 23 points and nine rebounds in a win against Syracuse.

Paul Harris, Syracuse, G, So.
Averaged 18.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists, shooting 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the field in two games. Scored 22 points with eight boards in the win against Georgetown.

Joe Alexander, West Virginia, F, Jr.
Averaged 14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 blocks in wins against Seton Hall and Rutgers. Had a game-high 15 points against the Scarlet Knights.
