Stan Heath continues to reshape the Bulls and added a defensive big man via the JUCO rote when 6'10-220 pound center Alejandro "Alex" Rivas-Sanchez from Pratt community college in Kansas verbally committed to play for USF as part of the '08 class.

"I committed yesterday," said Rivas Sanchez. "After talking with my coach, my foster family here, and my family a little bit. They all told me good things, and It was the best deal for me"

Before committing to the Bulls Tuesday, he was considering Florida Atlantic, SMU, Texas Tech which he said have all offered.

"I really like the Tampa area. I'm from the Dominican Republic and it's warm down there. Also I like the chance to play in the Big East, and I feel I have a pretty good chance to get a lot of minutes there."

While at Pratt, Rivas was known for his defense, ability to gather rebounds and as a shot-blocker, averaging 8.7 points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.1 blocks for the season, and earned 2008 KJCCC All-Jayhawk West second team. As a freshmen was second on the team with 9.3 rpg, and averaged 4.8 ppg, with 105 Blocks (3.0 avg.).

"I can rebound pretty well, that's what I do best. I can also block shots and run the floor pretty well for my size."

For a big man Rivas also likes a fast paced game. "I like to run. When I get a rebound I just want to push the Ball and run or put the ball in on offense."

Known for his defensive skills, Rivas also knows what he wants to work on as a player.

"Yeah I got a pretty good shot, but I want to work on becoming more consistent," said Rivas. "I want to keep working on my post move, add more muscle and get stronger."

Rivas Sanchez, who is from the Dominican Republic, first went to Redemption Academy and then transferred to Laurinburg Prep before attending Pratt said he started to get more familiar with USF just recently.

"They started sending me letters last year, but really started to me several weeks ago," said Rivas. "To be honest I don't know a lot about the program, but when spoke with Coach Heath and he told me about his background, he seems to be a pretty good guy, and people tell me good things."

The all-conference center who spent some time in Ft. Lauderdale and played for Team Breakdown of the AAU, has never been to USF and isn't sure when He's going to visit."

"Right now, I'm not sure when I'll visit. There were some issues with me visiting. So I got to get done with school here first, and then I'll probably visit after that."

Rivas said that even though he committed, he hasn't signed yet, and would like to talk some more with his family, and would like to visit the school first.

"I'm very excited," said Rivas. "I haven't signed yet, but I told Coach Samuels that I'm very interested, and I want to go there."

Is there a chance that the commitment won't stick?

"There is always the chance, and I want to talk it over with my parents some more, but I feel very strongly about USF right now."
