Bulls are battling the big boys for Emilien

The biggest impact from USF's number 2 ranking last year can be felt in recruiting for the '09 class. A few years ago the Bulls wouldn't stand a chance against teams like Michigan, Ohio State, and Southern Cal. Find out why Vlad is listing South Florida among the giants of college football. One of the more highly recruited prospects that USF is battling for this year is Vlad Emilien from Plantation High School. USFNation caught up with Vlad, "The Hitman" in Tampa when he was participating in the Scout.com 7-on-7 tournament. Back then the Bulls had just offered and he was beginning to receive a lot of interest from around the country. Now the 6-foot-1, 190 pound safety tells us that he's wrapping up spring practice and has been receiving a handful of new offers every week.

"Spring practice is almost over, it's been going very well." Adding, "I've been working on my speed and technique. By the end of my senior season I want to be known as the best safety in the nation. That's my goal."

In the last two weeks there have been numerous college coaches out to watch him play and almost all that have seen him have offered.

"In the last two weeks I got Louisville, South Carolina, Southern Cal, Michigan, Wake Forest, Alabama, Wisconsin, FIU, Colorado, Boston College and North Carolina."

"This spring has been great for me, I'm really enjoying it and taking it all in. I feel very lucky and blessed to receive all this attention."

Add that to the likes of Tennessee, South Florida, Ohio State, Rutgers and that makes for quite an impressive list. In total Vlad has 35, so with all this attention did the Bulls make a big enough splash onto the national radar to compete for a recruit like Emelien?

"USF is in my top 5 right now. They've been telling me that I have a good chance to start as a freshman. They have good coaching and starting as a freshman would give me more exposure to NFL scouts to evaluate me."

Vlad says after last year he started paying more attention to USF and the fact that they were one of the first teams to recruit him also helps their cause.

"I like the coach that recruits me, Coach Scott. He's been recruiting me very hard, he came to my school and we talk on the phone a lot. He's a down to earth guy. I also have a number for the DB coach (Troy Douglas), I've been real busy the last few days but I'm going to call him soon."

The other teams in Emilien's top 5 are, in no order -- Ohio State, North Carolina, Southern Cal, USF and Michigan. Last season Emilien made a name for himself by racking up 93 tackles and two picks while playing linebacker, free safety, strong safety and even some corner. He also has a 3.5 core GPA and will be taking his SAT this June.

This summer Vlad plans to take a road trip on the East Coast to visit a majority of the schools that have offered. He says the goal of his visits is to get a candid look at how the coaching staff interacts with their players.

"To me the most important factor is the environment, the coaching staff and academics. I want to major in business finance."

Next Thursday Vlad closes out his spring when Plantation will play Dr. Kropp in their annual spring game. USFNation will catch up with Vlad before his unofficial visit to USF this summer.
