Bulls Busy in California This Year

This is the third time in consecutive weeks that USFNation is reporting a JUCO tackle from California has been offered. Find out more about this 6'7, 305 BIG man and why he's interested in coming in and helping the Bulls right away in '09. Get informed, only on USFNation.com!

Another week, another Cali JUCO prospect has been offered by the Bulls. This time it's Carlos Savala from College of the Desert in California. Savala who's been mentioned on USFNation in the past is a 6-foot-7, 305 pound offensive tackle. You won't find much written about him because he didn't have a single offer coming out of high school then took a year off before entering JUCO.

After high school Savala took a year off and joined the Navy, and received had a medical discharge not too long after enrolling. In high school he played football, but wasn't big enough to get any looks from college coaches. The monster who now plays for College of the Desert only weighed 235-240 his senior year. Now that the weight is on, Savala credits his lack of size for learning great technique in high school.

"Once the weight came on everything fell into place, I already had the form and technique. In a weird way it helped me to get where I am today. "

Currently Carlos is holding one offer, however, five other teams are showing interest, Arizona, Florida, San Diego State, Kansas State and UTEP. The only offer he has in writing is from South Florida, he says Coach Canales has been recruiting him for about a month.

"I've talked to him a few times and called him this week to ask a few questions."

Carlos is new to the recruiting game, having not been offered while in highschool.

"I got the offer a couple weeks ago, I've been looking at it and I called him to ask him what's next. I didn't know if it's something I should jump on right away or keep an open mind and see who else offers."

"We talked about that for a while and he reassured me that they want me and they want me to make the best decision for myself."

Carlos admits the process can be intimidating, but he likes the fact USF has taken interest from across the country. It was recently brought to his attention by of all people, a former Cane, that he should take the Bulls seriously.

"I actually talked to a former Hurricane player and he told me that if a team is coming all the way from the East Coast to recruit me it shows how much they want me. Coach Canales has explained to me the situation they'll have on the offensive line and that's all I'm looking for – A chance to compete for a starting spot."

This recruitment won't start to heat up till the fall, plans have already been made for Carlos to come in for an official visit during the Bulls bye week. USFNation will keep you updated on Savala and the other JUCO recruits on the board for '09.

My Take:
Carlos Savala is being recruited as a left tackle for the Bulls and from all the tape I've seen on JUCOs he's by far the most talented. He's got it all - quick feet, size, strength and most importantly he finishes with authority! At 6'7, 305 he benches 315 and squats 450 and has only been getting in "football shape" for the last year, another season under his belt and the possibilities are endless. The Bulls have a real shot here, they were the first to offer and Carlos told me he's moved away from home before to join the Navy and moving to Florida is something he's interested in.
