"I'm committing to USF." Says Dixie High School's Gerard Atkins "My recruiting coaches know, but I'm going over to USF tomorrow to tell coach Leavitt in person."

Just last week USFNation reported that Atkins had received his offer from South Florida, Atkins only needed a week to know that he's ready to be a Bull. The 6-foot-5, 225 pound tight end is the third Pinellas County commit (Adaris Bellamy, Jacquez Jenkins). Atkins admits location and tradition played a part in his decision.

"I'll have the opportunity to play close to home, my family will get to see me play all the time." Adding, "USF's ties to my school also played into it, Andre Hall and Coach Leavitt went there."

Throughout the process coach Greg Gregory has been Gerard's main recruiter, since the offer he's also been talking with his position coach Larry Scott.

"I felt comfortable with both of them. I'm excited about playing for coach Scott, he reminds me a lot of my head coach at Dixie. He's real easy to talk to and laid back, I like that."

Last season Atkins played wide receiver and caught 5 touchdowns, he said he's ready for the transition over to TE. At 225 pounds, Atkins says he hopes to be 230-235 by the time he gets to USF next year.

"I'm going to be a pass catching tight end in their offense. They use the tight end a lot, I'm excited about that."

Gerard Atkins currently has a 2.5 GPA and an 840 on his first attempt at the SAT. He says he's confident in his decision and is done with visits. Atkins also had an offer from FAU.

"I'm real confident, USF is where I want to be. I'm ready to help them get to the next level."
