Many in the Tampa Bay area are familiar with Kevin Williams, the former Gibbs stand-out and one time USF commit that went the JUCO route. Now after a superb season at Los Medanos College, he is now one of the top JUCO corners and punt/kick returners in the country, and has been making a name for himself.

"Things are going real good out here, and I'm seeing a lot of action," said Williams. "I'm in magazines for super sophomore as an athlete, a pre-season JUCO All-American, and things like that. It's really going great."

While at Gibbs High School, Williams played multiple positions and had a standout career, but still needed a test score. He was to join USF in the spring of 2007 after earning a qualifying score on the ACT exam, but there was a glitch in this transcripts and USF placed him at the City College of San Francisco.

"I'm sure what happened, I though I was set, but I wasn't," said Williams. "I went to City College for a semester, and then transferred to Los Mendanos, and everything worked out for the better."

Williams (5-10, 173) had a big season for Los Mendanos, showing the quickness and speed (4.39) to be a top corner prospect as well a return man. As a lock down corner, he posted close to 40 tackles, 28 pass break-ups, 4 interceptions, two sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery. On special teams Williams didn't disappoint averaging 40.3 yards on 34 kick returns, with 2 touchdowns, and also scored twice on punt returns. Not bad considering he was projected as a receiver in college.

"I play receiver too, I'll go up and get the ball." said Williams. I didn't play receiver last year, but I will this season."

After a stellar season like the one Williams had, many schools have jumped on the electric playmaker this go around.

"I have offers from Memphis, Utah State, West Virginia, Hawaii, Arizona, USF, Oregon State, Arizona State, and also schools like Akron, Toledo, and stuff like that. Also Clemson has been showing interest."

"I've actually made a soft verbal commit to Memphis already."

With an ever growing list of suitors how solid is the commitment he made this past spring?

"It's a soft commit right now," said Williams said. "I like them a lot and that's why I committed this spring, but at the same time, I also want to keep my options open, and see what my best choices are."

Williams did say there was one factor that stands out in what decision he makes

"Basically if a school is not talking about me coming in and playing right away, then I'm not really interested."

The versatile athlete will have three years to play two and plans to sign this December and join a team next spring.
