UM Commit Keeping an Eye on USF

For the second week in a row, Miami commit Mike James was on the sidelines to watch the Bulls. James tells USFNation why he's interested in watching South Florida play, why he didn't make it to the UM/UF game and what coaches he talked with on the phone this week. Read on for the details

Saturday's South Florida vs. Central Florida match-up brought out some of the top high school talent in the state to the sidelines for an up close look at these two rivals. USFNation already spoke with Josh Robinson of Plantation HS and now we caught up with Mike James from Ridge Community HS, who was also at the game.

"Oh man, the game was great. USF made a couple mistakes to let UCF back in the game, but they finished the game and won. It was great though, it was an awesome played game with some hard hitting."

"The atmosphere was live! That's what I like, the fans were into it, it was great."

As a junior James rushed for 1,100 yards and had a combined 15 touchdown's rushing/receiving. Going into his senior year, the 4-star RB is considered to be one of the top backs in the state. In late June he committed to the University of Miami after considering offers from BC, Kentucky, USF, Illinois and Louisville to name a few.

However, two weeks into the college season, James has seen the Bulls play twice and has not made it to a UM game despite them playing in one of the best match ups of the season when they faced UF in the Swamp last weekend. James explains why he was in Orlando instead of Gainesville on Saturday.

"Well, Coach Franks came to my game Friday. Since he came to my game the night before I went to see USF play on Saturday. Plus I wanted to see them play in person again."

While watching the game James said he focused closely on the way the Bulls utilized their running backs.

"I liked the way they used their backs in different formations. I liked how on the goal line they used that little inverted wing-formation. I really liked the different things they do."

He also says that he's been in consistent contact with Head Coach Jim Leavitt ever since the SuperBull in late June.

"I actually talked to Coach Leavitt last night, I talked to him and Coach Franks. I enjoyed it, it was awesome. I'm basically always talking to Coach Leavitt and Coach Burnham. Coach Burnham is my main recruiter and I just started talking with Coach Franks in the last week."

Is there a reason he's been staying in such close contact with the South Florida staff and has the UM coaches asked about James attending two straight USF games?

"Not really, we talked for the first time in two weeks last night. I talked to Coach Hurtt last night, we were on the phone for a minute but then he had to do something. Then I talked a little bit to the running back coach. I haven't talked to them very much."

"I'm a little concerned. I'm wondering why we haven't talked on the phone as much, but I'm still checking in with them."

Mike James told USFNation he is still a solid commit to the Canes but will continue to follow the Bulls as they try to take down nationally ranked Kansas this Friday at Raymond James. He says if the game was played on Saturday he'd be on the sidelines, instead he'll have to try and catch the fourth quarter when he gets home from his game on Friday night.

"I wish I could come, I'm sure it's going to be a crazy game. I'm going to try and catch the end of it when I get home from my game. I'll probably DVR it too."
