The offensive line is always a recruiting priority, but the '09 class is going to be especially important with the Bulls graduating 4 starters after the season. The top recruit this year is a JUCO tackle named Carlos Savala from College of the Desert in California. He's been talked about a lot on USFNation.com and made the top 3 in the latest USFN Hot 20.
This year Carlos opened the season by not allowing a sack in 4 starts.
"I feel great." Adding, "I feel like I'm getting better every week."
Savala is a 6-foot-7, 305 pound left tackle that the Bulls have been actively recruiting since the Spring. They were the first to offer and Coach Mike Canales even flew across the country to watch him practice.
Other teams that have offered include Kansas State and San Diego State. Arizona recently made a call to Carlos and an offer could be coming soon. Among those teams he says it's the Bulls that are on him the hardest.
"I actually talked to Coach Canales on the way to my game on Saturday. I also talked to him a few days after the Kansas game. That was a great game, it's one of those games that you love to watch and would love to play in."
With the season moving along quickly it's time for Savala to start thinking about visits. He's working on setting up a visit to South Florida during the second week in November, after his last regular season game. He may also visit Kansas State and San Diego State, but nothing has been set as of now.
When asked if he has a top 3, Carlos said that would tough to answer because there's really only one team he's focused on.
"Right now I'm really liking South Florida. That's pretty much where I'm leaning right now. They are the ones that want me the most and they make it sound like if I came in I could make a big difference."
Carlos is expecting the USF staff to make a visit to his school in early October during their bye week. While on the visit the Bulls coaches will also take a hard look at Jack Julsing, he plays right tackle for College of the Desert, and is close to being offered. If the Bulls could land two mammoth JUCO tackles it would make an immediate impact on next year's team.
