The Bulls picked up a surprise commitment today from 5-foot-7, speedster Derrick Hopkins.

"I just knew South Florida is where I wanted to go. I didn't want to wait till signing day. It was between USF and Kansas State, I really ,liked Kansas State a lot, their coaching staff is great, but I want to be a Bull."

The Bulls did not offer Hopkins at his visit, but had been showing him interest for weeks. And true to his word, Coach Leavitt told Hopkins he would let him know by the end of last week.

"Coach Leavitt called me last week to let me know, and I committed today when I was with Coach Canales and Coach Scott at my school."

Although he only stands at 5'7, Derrick Hopkins brings something the Bulls have been lacking the past few years -- blazing speed. Hopkins is a "track guy" who runs the 100m in 10.35, the 200m in 20.97 and the 40 yard dash in 4.32.

He says he's fully qualified throught the NCAA Clearinghouse and will enroll at USF in the summer.
