Everyone in the Bay area knows all about All-American Ryne Giddins, the gem of USF's ‘09 class, but Armwood also had three dominating junior linemen that along with Giddins lived in opponent's backfield. One of those being rising junior Alton Bailey, one of the top DL prospects in Florida that was offered by the USF staff.
"They offered me awhile back when the season ended," said Bailey. "The d-line Coach Patrick offered me. He's a pretty cool coach."
The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Bailey runs in the 4.7 range and draws comparisons to former Hawk lineman Torrey Davis, a five-star prospect now with the Gators. They both have similar builds, and play a similar style games. Bailey is a big strong lineman that boasts a 350 bench press and a 680 squat.
"I'm a lot stronger than last year, but I really want to work on my speed, get better in all aspects, and improve my ranking."
Bailey was a sophomore starter for Tampa Tech before transferring to Armwood before the 2008 season. As a junior he recorded over 30 tackles and 6 sacks, including 3-sacks in the regional final against Tampa Tech. After the season he earned All-County first team, All-Suncoast first team, and third team All-State, and the recruiting interest in the big man has really picked up.
"Since the season ended things have gotten a little crazy. I get a lot of letters and coaches are always stopping by."
The buzz on the Armwood DT started during the season and he already has some impressive offers.
"FIU was the first to offer, and I also got offers from USF, LSU, Boston College, Alabama, and a bunch of others. Florida is showing interest and my coach said North Carolina is going to offer me."
Armwood is just around the corner from the USF campus, and Alton recently attended USF's junior day last Wednesday.
"It was pretty cool, we saw the facilities and everything, saw the meeting rooms and a lot of stuff. We talked with the coaches, went to a basketball game and had a lot of fun. They got a pretty good program over there."
With plenty of schools showing interest and offering does Bailey already have a short list of favorites?
"Yeah I do, LSU, USF, Boston College and Alabama."
Bailey was part of Armwood's fearsome foursome on the defensive line and says he talks to Ryne Giddins regularly and they discuss all kinds of things including a possible future together.
"We talk all the time about everything," said Bailey. "We talk about playing together all the time, but that's a big decision, and I'm going to take my time with it."
Bailey also competes in track and was a starter on the Tampa Tech basketball team as a sophomore, but only played a handful of games as a junior. Right now he's training and getting ready for spring ball, and plans on taking some visits this spring and looking forward to camping this summer.
