USF Spring Practice Q&A: S Jerrell Young

Bulls safety Jerrell Young has been slated as a starter this spring, and the sophomore DB tells us his thoughts on the first week of spring. Stay informed with USFnation.com

USFNation:  How does it feel to come into the spring slated as a starter?

Jerrell Young:  It feels good, and it's an opportunity that I'll try and take advantage of. It's still wide open though, and I'm not going to say that I'm starting. Coach Rachel says that it's just the next guy up. I could get hurt on one play and I'd expect the next guy to step up and do what I'm doing.

USFN:  What was the biggest change you've made over the past year?

Young:  I just focused on fundamentals really, and tried to learn from Carlton Williams, Louis Gachette and Danny Verpaele, they brought me in. Louis was actually my host when I came in for my visit, so I kind of looked up to them as big brothers.  Now that they are all gone it's my time to step it up.

USFN:  Talk about how it is with the new secondary coach Tresey?

Young:  Fire, he brings a lot of fire with him on to the field. Coach Douglas was kind of laid back with a little fire side, but Coach Tresey being the new DB coach and defensive coordinator has all kinds of fire, he's a fiery guy out at practice, and It's impressive to watch him work, he's all fired up watching and yelling at the DB's.

USFN:  How are the DBs responding to the new coach?

Young:  You got to take it as it is. We only had a few days of practice and he's going to be here for a long time. We got the spring, summer and the fall and however long to get used to each other. He even said it's been a long time since he's practiced for two hours, but he liked it and we like him.

USFN:  What is your current height and weight this spring?

Young:  I'm 6'2 and I'm up and down between 198 and 202 pounds. With all the running we do my weights about the same but I'm stronger.

USFN:  How do you feel about the youth movement in the secondary?

Young:  We're going to be alright. We got a lot of younger guys moving up and there's going to be a bit of a learning curve. With a new defense and coaches there's going to be learning curve for everybody, but we're going to be alright.

USFN:  What do you want to accomplish this spring?

Young:  I just want to get better every day.  If we can get just two percent better every day, then we'll be alright.
